After the shuttle was complete, I built the display base that would go with it. The Museum paid for a U-Haul to transport everything down to Bowling Green. (A big one)
-
Because the museum was new, they had a very limited budget. The only things we asked to be reimbursed for, were the supplies. The labor was free. This was our way of making a donation to the museum.

Good Afternoon, https://www.flickr.com/photos/159342774@N07/albums/72177720315280091 Over a year ago, a museum in Bowling Green Ky asked me if I were interested in restoring a gift from NASA. A 1/15th scale model of the space shuttle. It was made by Rockwell International. It is made of fiberglass. When it was shipped to my house from Johnson Space Center. It was in pretty bad shape. Because of the scope of the project, I had to recruit some of my modeling friends. Every square inch of the shuttle is covered with either polystyrene (heat shield tiles), or athletic tape (Thermal Protection Blankets) . The Mongoose (Chris Vandegrift)made several trips to my home to work all day on it. We added lights to the shuttle as well. It took around 645 hours to complete. The museum, Aviation Heritage Park showcases famous aviators from Kentucky. One of those was Astronaut Col. Terry Wilcutt. He was present for the dedication ceremony. Thanks for having a look. Christopher

Thank you Alain. The Smithsonian channel did a short video on their story. Thanks for having a look. -
Lovely build. Awesome diorama 😉

The presentation is a real eye popper. Paint job, and weathering🤩

Awesome build. Love the camo job.

The weathering looks great. It’s got that “used” look, just like the real ones. I also like the non-slip surface on the cabin floor. Thanks for sharing.

Steve, They were purchased off of eBay. The company name is 3-D Print Mayhem . Hope this helps. Chris -
Jay, This is, by far, the coolest modeling project I have ever seen. Your attention to the details shows in every picture you post. I’ve done my research before on projects I’ve started, but not too the extent that you have. Thanks for letting us ride along with you, on this epic project. It’s like a good book that you start to read, you just don’t want to set it down. That’s the anticipation that I feel each time I go to another page on the build thread. Chris

1/32 Trumpeter P-51B Mustang “ Shangri La”
Cbowling replied to Tolga ULGUR's topic in Ready for Inspection
Definitely my favorite paint scheme of the P-51 Mustang. I love the weathering technique that you’ve applied. Not too much, just enough to make it look realistic. Thanks for sharing. -

Blake, For someone who’s been absent from the hobby for 15 years, you haven’t lost any of your mojo. The airbrush job turned out great. As for the kit, you definitely had your work cut out for you before you even open the box. I bought one a few months ago and it fought me the whole way until it was completed. I agree with your statement about the engineering of the kit. Congratulations on a spectacular build of a very difficult model. -

The “Fabric” on the fuselage and wings is very convincing. I generally stay away any kind of silver finish. You did a fantastic job on the paint job. Thanks for sharing. -
That’s a model you don’t usually see. Excellent outcome, Mr. Bond.!!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/159342774@N07/albums/72177720319658425 This is another one that I was asked to build for the museum in Bowling Green Ky. The upstairs portion of the museum belongs to the River Rats Fighter Pilot Association. The association represents fighter pilots past and present. My assigned build was an F-105F named “Crown 7”, Big Brass Ones. It was flown by John Revak, with Stanley Goldstein as his weapons officer. The River Rats had their 50th reunion at the opening of the museum. John Revak was not able to attend the reunion. I had the pleasure of meeting Stanley Goldstein in person. He had no idea that the model was being built. When he saw it for the first time, he became emotional. I’ll never forget to look on his face. I was honored to build it for them. After seeing his reaction, it was absolutely worth everything. As a special thanks, he gave me a challenge coin with Crown seven on it later he sent me a Keith Ferris print that was not only standby John and Stan, but Keith Farris himself as well. An amazing experience that I will never forget.

Looking at the first few photos, you would swear that you’re looking at a real Mustang. As far as I’m concerned, you absolutely nailed the paint job and the weathering is great.

That is an amazing build. The paint and weathering is top notch work. -
Thank you very much, Pete. I was able to find a Big Ed set on eBay. I dressed some of it up using white ez line to simulate avionics wiring.
