Whilst I've had a bit of a break from my bench lately, my wallet hasn't been so fortunate. 
 
Despite USPS' best efforts, these beauties turned up for Christmas

My last built of 2019. Finished just in time before starting the christmas break.
 
It is my second Corsair from Tam so no surpises (if it is even possible to have surprises with Tam).
Just one slight negative for me: the decals: they are always very thick. So cutting out all the clear support film is a must to avoid silvering especially on the big numbers on the fuselage side. Then I made good use of the microset/microsol.
 
I just replaced the wheels by Eduard resin's. Anything else is oob.
 
For the paint, I miraculously managed to find a tin of Humbrol 181 (the famous Glossy sea blue that is out of prod since years..)
Used it for the first gloss layer. They I dry brushed the matt version of the sea blue (Hu 77) either strait from the can or mixed with few drops of white.
On the radiators area on the top wing I also brushed some yellow zinchromat (81) and some alu 56 here and there.
 
Then panel liners: clear (white-grey) then brownish. Some pigment here and there (mainly exhaust and gun ports)

But it did not aged well : the white became yellowish other time..., also at that time I was brush painting and it was not very good work (lots of brush marks...)
 
So I basically striped all paint, sanded the surfaces, applied a layer of putty, sanded again and applied a layer of Mrsurfacer thenpainted again using Tamyia gloss white and red (X-2 and X-7).
Also I changed the air intake from the original kit because it was way too small (see the last pic above and compare to the one below).
I also replaced the prop by an eduard one. Painted with green stuff world Chrome.
Varnish is VMS gloss and decasl from draw decals.

My conversion of the Revell P-51D into Dago Red is now complete and joined Red Baron and Voodoo on the display stand. Strega should join them soon as the Witch is being refurbished at the moment.
 
That was my first big conversion project. I am generally not really a big fan of scratch builds but this one was fun.
In the end, the most difficult part was to adjust that f**** vacuform canopy...
 
So the basis is the revell kit. Painted with Tamyia paints (the red is a mix of gloss red x-7 with a drop of orange X-6
Chrome on the blades is from green stuff world. Unfortunatly, the photos does not show the real shine of that paint. It does look like real chrome. Only problem : it cannot be varnished and is quite prone to finger prints....
On the LG doors, I used Vallejo metal color chorme.

Varnish is Vallejo Polyurethane Gloss (many coats...)

Some more progress.
 
In the end I decided to try the decals for the white scheme and it turn out fine. The white decals are thick enough to cover well on top of the red.
It was not easy to place since the htp is already in place so I had to cut the decal in several pieces to adjust it. I did some touch up of the white paint with a small brush.
 

 
 
The propeller is finished. not perfect but I'll leave it as it is since the best is the ennemy of the good.
It is the eduard resin part for the revell P-51. Very nicely casted. I sanded the leading edge of the blades to have the specific Strega shape.
I used the Green Stuff Worl Chrome. the airbrush variant was not available so I used the handbursh version of the product deluted 50/50 with alcool 90° to spray it. It turned out quite nice.
 
 
After a failed test with the vallejo metal varnish, I found out that VMS varnishes are also water based. The test was satisfactory. We loose just a bit of the shine of the chrome but not so much (you can see the reflection on the spinner.) So I used it to protect the chrome parts. If unprotected this chrome paint will be subject to finger prints from the slightest touch...
 

 

Red applied on Strega (Tamyia X-7 Gloss red).
I'll redo the blue line. I'm not satisfied.

And the canopy... That was not a fun part.. I hate vacuform so much....
It's a leftover from my September Fury built so not really made for a P-51 conversion... It was difficult to cut it to the right size and adjust it. But with some patience, I managed to have something more or less convincing.

 
Built completed !
I'll do better photos with the lightbox and a proper camera someday.
