Chuck, Outstanding build.  I am glad that I pick up not only information from your build but also Ideas for my builds.  Looking forward to your next masterpiece.  Dan

The armored glass in front of the gunsight complicated matters significantly, but I was able to get it out.  As a bonus, I managed to scratch the canopy in front of the armored glass too.  I then had to wiggle a tiny paintbrush with some Future on it to clean up the scratches.  Worked like a champ.

    Good thing, because....

today some small progress, yesterday I sanded the tail rudder with 1500 sandpaper and today I painted the stabilizer and everything was perfect, then I glued the lower part of the wings and put a little putty in some small gaps between the fuselage

By the way, do you know if any decal manufacturer makes the same decals as the Tamiya kit? Basically I don't like Tamiya decals because they are very thick and don't look like they were painted. Do you know if Eduardo, AOA, FightertownDecals or someone similar makes decals (the same ones in the kit) for this f16?

Phabulous Phantom Phans!  Happy to remind modelers we offer seamless intakes intended for 1/32 scale Tamiya F-4 Phantom kits.  Our intakes include J79 engine inlets of your choice of two different types.  Our F-4 intakes and inlets have been available since 2022.

We ship from our workshop in North Carolina, USA.

Our models are original designs, not printed from designs made by others.

Smokey reacted to orion2 in Laminar Flow Design 3D printed seamless intake for Tamiya Phantom
    Hello,

Laminar Flow Design has made available their earlier-designed seamless intake for the 1/32 Tamiya Phantom. It's available either as a physical print or as a download.

    https://laminarflowdesign.com/gb/132-set/46-copy-of-dl-f4-phantom-seamless-intake.html

I choose that option and a friend of mine printed it on one of his printers. There was an issue because the front edge is so thin the printer had troubles printing it correctly, but even then the part was still usable.
It fits very nicely into the Tamiya intake part.

There is not much left on the market to correct Tamiya's awful intake, so this is a very welcome addition.

I use both .005 annealed and non-annealed aluminum sheet.

I use the annealed for the wrinkly skin panels typical to the T-38, and the non for the tight skin (like on the horizontal slabs)

    THE BUILD STARTS …
A caveat here, there and everywhere  during this build:
one needs to study the drawings on the instruction sheet VERY carefully.
The consensus is that current kit instructions are generally bad. They’re not! It’s the kits which are getting more and more complex.
More details, more tiny parts (and general carpet monster fodder) add to that most of the current kits are generated by 3D CAD which methods are utterly different from the ‘classic’ way.
Instruction drawings nowadays are VERY accurate since they’re mostly generated from the same CAD files used to manufacture the kit. One has to look at every tiny detail to make sure that the parts are in the correct position. More than often, the drawings are so small that they need to be enlarged so that they can be ‘read’.
Also beware that two following sequences do not necessarily mean that the drawings are done from the same view point. One can show the assembly front to back and the next can show the same assembly back to front!

With all these caveats in mind, let’s proceed to the first stage: the engine.
Once the sub-assemblies are done , here are the main components.

The Sakae 11 out of the box. Painted and washed. The wiring will be added later.

Assembling a multi-part cowling has always been a nightmare to some.
Yet it went smoothly for me as I slavisly follow Border’s part sequence.
I first put the corresponding number on each part and dry-fit in-and-out with masking tape.

Contrary to Border’s instructions, I added the inner front ring to secure the assembly. The masking tape is removed and green Tamiya super thin cement flooded in the joints. The resulting bond is strengthened by the inner ring.

Leave overnight to harden. Front ring added. Cowling interior painted with my own brew of Aotake.

    Engine completed.

    That’s it folks.
    Comments and questions are welcome.
    Until next time.
    Cheers,
    Quang

Thank you.  I more or less followed Luke Towan's tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSKG9rcb_Y4

I varied in that I wrapped the trunks in layers of 1.5" wide masking tape to help give them texture and strength.  This is a much larger scale than what Luke works in, so I had to add some heft to them.  Cutting the fronds was the most annoying part.  To get them to come cleanly off the cutting mat, I had to set them to run suuuuuuuuuuper slow and do 2 passes through the cutter.  A set of 12 fronds - all that would fit on one sheet of paper - took 65 minutes.  Each tree has 38 fronds, so you do the math.  That was just to cut them, then I still had to super glue a wire to the back of them and paint them.  They turned out really really nice and I'm very happy with them, but I shan't be doing another one again for some time if I can help it.

Interestingly, whatever materials Luke uses behaved the opposite of mine.  He put a sheet of laminate on a sheet of paper then ran it through his cutter.  I used oramask 813 on a sheet of paper.  He then glued the stem to the laminate as he specifically said the leaves would bend towards the laminate side over time.  On the first, taller tree, that's what I did, but my leaves bent towards the paper, so that tree has leaves that are bent upwards from the stem.  On the second, shorter tree, I glued the stem to the paper side and got the result I was after.  They both look great, and I think it adds a little visual interest anyway, so whatever.  Lesson learned.

    Anyway...

Today was a good, long day at the bench.  I bopped back and forth between working on the figures and the base.  The figures are still very much a work in progress (only the flesh tones are done), but the base is finished!

Though not present in the photos, I added a little grass for visual interest.  I did it in such a way that maybe the SeaBees missed a swatch or two as they were grading the runways and taxiways.  I don't intend to glue down the Corsair so that I can use this base for as a photo base for any single engine engine Pacific warrior.  Yes, I've tried squeezing the A-20G and Lightning in... they fit, but only just barely.

    Anyway, here you go.

    And a couple placeholders...

If all goes well, I should be able to finish up the figures this week and turn my attention to the Corsair proper next weekend.

    Guys and gals,
This morning the friendly postman brought me these two parcels coming from opposing ends of the world.

The first one is the infamous and wrongly-scaled Border Kate. The other contains some AK paints from their Imperial Japanese Navy line.
That the two orders arrived simultaneously is what I consider a good omen.

Please give me a few hours (days?) to regain my composure. I’ll get back to you with more details.
In the mean time here are some quick shots for your appreciation.

    All the best,,
