Zero77
So, i've unmasked everything and here it is. Look at it, look at it well.... because in a few minutes there wont be anything.... And voila ! I will restart it from scratch, but this time, i'll be painting the yellow stripes first ! D.B. Andrus
xmh53wrench
Yup, had the same exact experience with Model Master Metalizers. My Mustang looked really good in my book, but was impossible to handle, to mask, and get decals to adhere to. I am certain you will figure it out. Your prior finish was amazing and I believe I am new to your build, but is the oil canning of the skin oob of the kit, something you did, or an illusion? Zero77
What do you mean exactly by "oil canning of the skin"? Do you mean the stress skin effect? It is OOB, i think it is a molding defect, but i think it's cool actually and looks pretty good with a high shine finish ! I will put the F-86 aside for a few days and get back to other builds to take a break. I'll certainly paint the yellow stripes during the Christmas vacations. xmh53wrench
That puckering of the metal between the stringers on the wing...if thats a flaw...best flaw EVER!!!! (I realize thats probably not the greatest surface for a wing, but it sure looks neat). I hope that look remains after the next attempt at your NMF, its one of the most realistic looks Ive ever seen on an aircraft model. I have my fingers and toes crossed for ya. Zero77
No worries it will still be there, as i wont sand it, i've just removed the Rub-n-buff with some mineral spirit. Edited December 19, 2014 by Zero77
oppenheimer
Zero, why you dont try the model decals for the yellow bands????, i think with some microsol or solvaset you can get a nice looking yellow bands, my sabre is way far from the NMF, but for sure i will prime it gloss blak and will use some of that black for the stripes aroud the yellow and then start with the NMF

NM Finishes for myself was a long curve of mistakes, simply because there weren't' any good products available back then.tried RUB N BUFF on a few builds before abandoning it..you may not like this..but I would recommend trying something other than RUB N BUFF for a metallic finish on your good looking Sabre .Zero ,I'm rooting for you as well. Loic
Wow, sorry to hear you have to redo the painting job... but at least it is possible I am not expert at all with R&B but I remember reading somewhere it is way better to paint the marking first and then apply R&B. This said, despite you are having some tough time, it is interresting to see how you are dealing with this my friend ... Keep it up !
Zero77
Yes i'll be painting the markings first. And i cannot use decals because anyway i wont have all the decals i need as i am making a custom scheme that do not exist in any decal set. Zero77
Back to this one. It has stalled 6 months ago after stripping paint, but now i'm just ready to tackle it again. After a long masking job, i've strating to paint the yellow markings. Note that they are a bit different than the Korea War yellow markings (the black side stripes are thinner and the fuselage stripe doesn't have the same shape, especially on the belly). Korea War era yellow stripes, for comparison : First, after a long masking (had to make some templates to always have the same width, and a lot of picture analysing and mesuring to determine the correct dimensions) a coat of semi-gloss white : And then of course a coat of semi-gloss yellow : Next step this evening with the black stripes. The most difficult thing will be to get clean black stars with masks. They are very tiny and will certainly be on the edge of what can do my mask cutter. LSP_Paul, D.B. Zero77
Thanks Paul ! It's been more than 2 years (actually rather 3...) that i've started this one, and i definitely want to get it out of the shelf of doom. A question for Sabre specialists : Does anybody know why there are some plates on the wings that (almost) always looks dull, even on miror polished F-86? (it seems that the upper part of the tail also has this feature). Varnish? aluminium painting? Edited July 20, 2015 by Zero77
Zero77
The yellow markings are done. I've just finished the black stars on the yellow stripe on the nose. I've made stencils with my Silouhette Portrait cutter. The stars are prety small so i was afraid it was too small to get something clean enough. It's not too bad. The stars are 4mm wide, and i've also tried 3mm, and both were were cut correctly. In order to get the stars positionned in the right place, with the right spacement and the right angle, i've stuck the positive stars at first, then compare with the picture, correct, and finally stuck the stencil (negative stars). Here is the result (the black thin stripes besides the yellow stripe still need a few touch-ups) : I've also started to apply some metallic paint. It will be almost all rub-n-buff, but i've tried to apply some AK polished aluminium on the middle plates of the wings, as it is a bit less "mirror" than the rub-n-buff. I still have to make my mind if i go this way or not. (you can see the stabilators finished on some pictures, with yellow/black stripes and rub-n-buff) Edited July 27, 2015 by Zero77 alain11, D.B. geedubelyer
You are very brave tackling a whole airframe with rub 'n buff Zero. Respect bro'
Zero77
I've finally progressed on the NMF of my Sabre. I'm pretty happy with it ! A lot of experimentations, and so it's a lot of experience for next builds. I'm not sure i would use Rub-n-buff in next builds as it is very stressful. However, for very highly polished aircraft, it is unbeatable. As the NMF is (almost) done, i was able to unmask my yellow stripes, and also the cockpit, which has been masked for maybe 2 or 3 years ! I did not even remember what it looked like. It's the great AMS cockpit. Now i find my paintjob is not so good, but i will live with that. I'll just add a few drops of Microscale kristal clear on the instruments. The seat was a very nice piece of resin, and i'm pretty happy with my paintjob, so i wont touch it up. D.B.
