 I used 1.5mm solder wire for the spade grip as it is the easiest to bend. Before (!!) I wrapped it with 0.3mm copper wire. The surface could be a little less rough for my taste, but sometimes I have to make compromises...<_<

The brake lever is made of 1mm brass sheet

Very neat binding, especially since it is wire. 

 

Did you consider dipping the grip in something like PVA to knock the texture back a bit?

 

Your last photo really illustrates the size of this model.

 

She'll be a big, mighty impressive bird when she's complete.

I made a press mold with 0.6mm wires for the corrugated sheet metal for the the heelboards. The counterpart is a piece of balsa wood on the brass plate. The whole thing is pressed between the vice jaws.

To deepen the grooves a little more, I roll them with a small self-made roller. (a piece of silicone tube on a wooden cylinder
