Thanks Ron

Appreciate the kind words. Getting pretty close to actually starting the color coats once I finish up the primer stage.

This week, it's been a few nights of an hour here and there but from late Saturday to mid Sunday afternoon, it was all Jug time. I was really surprised that there weren't too many items to fix and clean up after priming. It was time to face the music: Cammo and painting. I decided after spending who knows how many hours reading posts and looking at countless photos as what the correct cammo colors aer for Schilling's Jug, I through caution to the wind, went with the gray undersides and moved on. I did come across some information suggestion the undersides, depending upon the date, were finished in either natural metal or light gray, but there really isn't any documented proof of that either.
Paints were mostly Tamiya acrylics but I've started to migrate towards enamels and the yellow rudder was my first use of enamels in years, maybe even decades. I was amazed that given the same techniques the enamel dried a lot smoother. Of course, I didn't have any flat yellow enamel and had to use gloss paint!
One other problematic point was there are almost no clear photographs of the complete right side of Schillings Jug, almost all the photographs are of the left side. Even the Cutting Edge decal instructions doesn't provide the right hand side view. I used as many photos as I could find to get close but some artistic license had to be used. From the photos, I can see there is more then a fair share of touch up work needing to be done, but I thought and wouod wait a few days for the paints to fully dry and then do back and clean things up.
Still test fitting parts as I painted the assemblies and both the cowl/engines and tail wheel assemblies are just still a loose fit. Hopefully this coming week, I can finish the prop and look forward to the start of the decaling and weathering process by next weekend.
Thanks for checking in
Enjoy.

Thanks Kev

I've been trying to stay focused and stick to the straight and narrow, so I can actually finish the Jug this time. I was surprised at how much blend I still need to do with the dark green cammo. The photos sure shows what I couodn't see while painting.

Looks awesome from where I'm sitting! The paint work came out really nice.

Question though, is there supposed to be a hole at the back of the tail wheel bay? Just seems a little strange that the leather boot doesn't go all of the way back

Keep up the awesome work!

Matt

Just double check the instructions and it sure does appear there is an opening at the end of the boot. Part D5 is the combo doors/boot and that's it, no other parts fill the opening. I normally need a few work sessions to clean up my cammo work, as I tend to keep refining and blending until the paint is ,much more even.

Thanks Harv

Seemed strange to me as well but I've checked and re-checked the instructions and nothing seems to close up the hole. Maybe it's for the tailwheel after it re-tracks.

I might have jumped the gun a bit on posting the cammo work before really cleaning it up and getting everything to blend a lot better. Also, once the invasion strips are on and along with the decals, the srarnge cammo patterns will better and will look correct.

Thanks Brian

Long way to go and much work is still needed to clean up the cammo work. Hoping to maybe cross the finish line with the Jug by the end of the month so I can finally break open my SWS Skyraider and go to town.

UPDATE: DECALING

I guess the term: steady as she goes, has to apply as the Jug has been moving slowly down the line towards towards the hanger door. Not being happy with how the cammo came out using Tamiya acrylics, I bit the bullet, reloaded with Model Master enamels and completely repainted the cammo, directly on top the Tamiya paint. I was lucky as there wasn't any cracking or reaction between the two paints. The cammo work this time around came out as I hoped when dry, the skin was quite smooth and with virtually no overspray. I left the undersides painted with Tamiya Acrylics, as there was no need to change it.

The wings and fuselage were glossed with Model Master Glosscote and the cowl was done with Future. Don't ask me why, I just wanted to compare the two. The results were about the same but when I buffed out the clear finishes, the Glosscote was easier to work with and the finish was super smooth.

Decals were mostly from Cutting Edge CED32086 (Thanks Harv), with the balance from Eaglecals and a few kit decals as well. The CE decals are super thin and even in warm water and a few drops of Micro Set added in, cracking was a small problem. The fuselage stars were so thin, that I needed to double decal them, as the cammo and invasion stripes bleed through.

The decal fit around the turboboost doors is poor (most likely my fault) and I have quite a bit of touch up work to do there to clean things up. If I would have used the closed doors, the fit would have been a dream, but of course, I didn't.

The cowling is only resting in place to see how things look.

Thanks for checking in.
