Hi Shep

Work on the Jug has slowed as being in the pool business and the time of year has kept me from the bench most nights. I've also started a second, non aircraft build which is sharing my limited bench time but helps keep all the juices flowing. Looking forward to spending my summer with both projects.

With not much free time this past month, as pool season kicks into high gear and tinkering around with my KGV, progress has been slow but still the Jug moves slowly down the line.

Not bad right out of the box but Hasegawa did miss a few items that needed to be added. For starters the upper third of the ignition harness was not molded and I needed to scratch one out with the appropriate number of harness wire points added. The front of the engine block was also a bit sparse and I added a few details and parts from my original Jug, dressing things up a bit. Where I could, I cut off the Hasegawa engine parts, added a few extra pieces from the Vector engine and things started to look a bit busier. One huge mistake I made was using thin lead wire for the ignition leads. They are way to soft and bend too easily. Next time, I need to remember to use copper wire, which had a bit more rigidity and strength. Just received my Fundekals Decals for the P&W, so I can add the logos and data plates, later this week.

Checking all my references for the correct colors, I painted the inside of the cowl and the firewall bare aluminum. The pushrods were airbrushed gloss black and the engine/cowl mount ring was finished in yellow zinc chromate, while the ignition wires were done a light brown color. From here, I lightly weathered the R2800 up a bit and called it quits, as most of the Big Brute except form the front nose area, can't be seen when housed inside the cowling.

Working as carefully as I could, I still had some problems obtaining a good fit at the wings / fuselage fairing seam but all is well after quite a bit of careful sanding and fussing .A bit of scribing is still needed to restore some of the lost panel lines but then it should be A-OK.

The step on each flap was sanded out and removed – Thanks Ron – I remembered this time. All that needs to be added is the rivet detail that was lost. One last item I need to ad, are the cowl pushrod controls - thanks John.

Compared to the Mustang and Spit, the Jug is MASSIVE and is one BIG, Bad Fighter.

Yay! It's good to see you back working on this Peter, and it sure is looking awesome. Looks like the fit was pretty much spot on all around it. Can't wait to see it with paint on it, then it will really come to life.

Yup, finally back working on the Framingdale Jug. With all the Jug builds going on and then seeing John jumping on the Has Jug, that' all it took and I couldn't resist. Fit has been pretty good but the wing roots just gave me a hard time. I really can't understand why but I needed to spend a lot of time carefully sanding and teasing them into place. The right leading edge wing root just didn't fit well no matter what I did, and the gap was filled in with CCA and sanded out. I'm almost ready to start scribing but still need to make a decision on the nav lights. The kit portrays them as just marked out spots at the tips to be painted but I'm leaning towards cutting them out and making clear lenses for the nav lights. It's the next item to be dealt with and then time to pull out the scribes.

Cutting them out and replacing them would probably be the best decision. Painting them on just wouldn't give the same result. I've heard that most of the Hasegawa kits that include inserts have similar fit issues, but looks like you've gotten through it nicely.

 

 

Great to see you back at it, hopefully the progress continues well when time allows.
