Azur 1/32 IAR-80-A

Recommended Posts

Work continues on the cockpit, this time on the mid-production headrest. This one only applies to serial number 131-181. Azur includes all of the versions of the headrest in the kit, so be sure to check references on which one to use. Painting was done using Vallejo acrylics, and then some oil paint glazes to blend in all of the texturing and highlighting. Please let me know what you think.

And this may be a complete longshot, but does anyone have the RB Productions 1/32 Romanian Pilot figure that they may be willing to part with? Since he shut down the store, I haven't been able to find one. I'd like to pair the pilot with the build the way that I did with my PZL build.

Wonderful work, Matt!  Riveting is top-notch and the head rest looks fabulous!

Well, it's perfect, absolutely superb.

I am unable to do as well!

Thanks very much guys. I'm glad that you like it. Did it all with very small horizontal strokes of paint over multiple layers, then slowly adding different colors in. Last job was a few glaze coats of Abteilung Shadow Brown oil paint to smooth things down

Another kit that has been lurking in my stash for far too long, it's nice to see a build thread on one, and it's looking good.

Cheers

Dennis

Thanks very much Dennis!  I'm finding that it's a nice kit, just make sure you check resources for the plane you're specifically building, there's a couple of tweaks that will need to be made that the instructions miss.

Cockpit is about ready to close up, just needs the rudder cables run before it can be sealed. The instructions are a bit lacking, but everything can be worked around.

It appears that the Drager system is more of a blue gray than a bright blue like Luftwaffe systems.  Just need to figure out how to do the oxygen hose now

Base of the hydraulic pump was redone in light blue, it looks closer to that in pictures than black.  I'm not going to scratch the manual fuel pump at the top because it's invisible under the cockpit deck

Cockpit module is assembled. Signal flare holders were drilled out, cables were added to control stick and instrument panel out of .25mm lead wire. The hole for the control stick on the front bulkhead needed to be opened up a bit for the stick to sit in the right spot.

Instrument panel was done with the kit decals, mostly. The bottom left decal on the right-hand panel was from Airscale to represent the oil temp gauge. Azur forgot to include it. Also, ignore the instructions when they tell you to add the little knob for the secondary oil cooler. It didn't exist until the IAR-80.C No.251. Not applicable at all to any of the kit aircraft.

The gunsight frame in the back acme mostly broken on the sprue, so two of the legs were replaced with .5mm rod. Instrument cabling was added since it is visible under the windscreen, probably. Two of the floor switches were replaced with MasterClub rivets, since they pinged off into the ether at some point in the process.

The kit seatbelts were annealed and added. They worked pretty well, painted up with Vallejo acrylics

Thanks for reading in everyone, please let me know what you think. If you see something I need to fix, definitely let me know.

Really nice modelling AND photography Matt!

Thanks Richard!  I've been trying to improve both to maybe show how things actually look when I see them on my desk
