Black basing question

Recommended Posts

Here shortly,(next few days) I'll be getting my MH-60L ready for painting.

My goal is to have the helo painted Night Stalker black with worn, slightly light colored faded spots on mainly the top areas.

I want to black base the model followed up by random spots of grey for the faded areas and the the final Night Stalker black blended on.

Does this sound like the way to go?

This is my 1st time black basing.

Thanks

Tim

Why don't you try it the other way - white basing?  If you are] trying to modulate the black finish, then go for a white or gray base and then apply your top coat to the effect you want.  Easier to get a faded and patchy effect when you are putting black over white/grey than the other way around.

I've tried doing it both ways - look at my Passion Wagon build to see how I did the green over a white base.

Here is a 1/48 P-39 I did Green over Grey/Silver mottled base:

Started with a coat of Green:

Then filling it in:

Definitely helps to have a paint mule to try it out on though!

Sorry for the late reply

I tries black basing for the first time about 18months ago on a 48th Tamiya Mossie

I really like the textures you can build up with varying thicknesses of paint.  Touch up are even easier as you cant see where you went and tightened up camouflage lines or overspray.

Anyway, hope these pics kinds explain how I did it.

I will definitely be doing this on my Brit Phantom build

In real life you see the surface kinda textured, I really like how it comes up and its super easy.

My only advice is to keep your paint thin and in a fairly small fan, and be prepared to take a long time layering it up

Hope this helps??

Cheers Anthony
