The lone P-51

Harold

Not doubting the authenticity of this exploit for one instant, but I don't understand why Howard was a lone aircraft.  Bomber support missions by fighters were usually two or three squadrons, so where were all the others?

The bombers had already been attacked once. The escorting fighters chased off the attackers and were scattered. Being the Squadron Commander, James Howard continued the mission by climbing back up to protect the bombers. The rest is history.

8th Air Force alone lost nearly 45,000 men, more than the entire Marine Corps or Navy (!) in the entire war.

The air war over Europe was absolutely savage.

Speaking of which, when is HBO going to get that new miniseries on the air? Seems like it's been in development forever.
