Is it just me or does "weathering your Heinkel" seem like code for some sort of illicit activity?!

"Hey, has anyone see Gazzas lately?"

"Yeah, he's out back...you know...'weathering his Heinkel.'"

:mental:

Hey!  Just sharing images about weathering effects I never knew about because they were usually lost in the 70/71 camouflage coupled with B&W photos.

Besides...  I use other code phrases for "weathering my Heinkel".

I never noticed smoke stains on and He-111 from the vents on the forward upper nacelles.  Probably wouldn't for the whitewash:

The top vents are feeding ram air into the cylinders so that makes sense that there is no exhaust staining there; that's a clean air intake, not a dirty air exhaust.

Check out the black areas on the sides of the engines coming out of the exhaust pipes!  That entire area including a good bit of the underside of the wing is just hammered in soot.  Top of the wing too!

I know there are a few He-111 builds happening out there and I just came across this photo taken from another He-111 flying close above.

I'm really amazed how bright the stencils are and the fuel streaks near the wing roots.

This is a great photo and not a common view, either.

Note the crew member in the top bubble canopy looking up at the photographer.
