Dainis Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Back on the forum after five years or so. Life got in the way. But back in the hobby for the last fifteen months and have my mojo back. Anyway, I will soon be starting the WNW AEG early and will be applying the kit's lozenge decals. They are precut. I have only used aviattic lozenge decals. What should I know about how to apply the WNW version of said decals? Any tips most welcome. Cheers! And it is good to be back.
Borsos Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 Hello Dainis, great project, the AEG G. IV. I haven’t started my AEG yet nor have I used WNW‘s lozenge decals yet. I also always have worked with Aviattic‘s. But as far as I know, having spoken to fellow modellers, the WNW decals in the AEG are useable; WNW only had issues with the decals in later kits like the Camel. I‘d always use a good hairdryer while using the decals, especially on the round nose of the AEG. There lies, to be honest, the issue that has kept me away from the AEG: I have no clue yet how to bring those decals around this nose. And every decal from every manufacturer is meant here, it’s hard to bring decals around such a nose without getting wrinkles. Andreas
Dainis Posted December 22, 2024 Author Posted December 22, 2024 Thanks for getting back. I'll just tackle them and apply them any way I can. More than one way to skin a cat so to speak. I assume the decals are opaque. Which brings me to another thing. I might paint the plastic a dark gloss blue to help hide any minor tears of the decals on application..if in fact the decals are opaque. Any thoughts?
John1 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I found WNW’s lozenge decals to be brutal to work with. Using a hairdryer helped to a point but they are thick and it’s a real struggle to get them to fit over raised detail or curved surfaces.
Dainis Posted January 14 Author Posted January 14 I've read various descriptions of WNW lozenge decals...not bad to well, not good. Since aviattic don't make precut decals for the AEG I will soldier on. My best guess at applying them successfully would be to cut them into smaller pieces, especially for curves..and thank you for your response! And does Aviattic produce night lozenge declas in sheets? Maybe I shoud take a look. Cheers!
petrov27 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 (edited) I did the "late" version with WNW decals and they went on pretty good aside from a little "silvering" - I dont think I had the surface glossy enough though so that is on me. Thought they looked pretty decent as well. Edited January 14 by petrov27 John1, Gary Needham and wunwinglow 3
Dainis Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 That's very encouraging and heartening. I assume the decals are opaque, so I was thinking of painting a gloss finish of dark blue to help hide any small tears. Thoughts? And thank you for your response. Cheers!

Yes - they were opaque and I did exactly that with the base color - a very dark (I think Tamiya) blue overall. Im thinking the only challenging area was placing them around the nose as that is a pretty complicated area but decal set and sol helped.
