mgbooyv8
Hi all, Oh yeah, enough models near ( - not on! ) the bench which qualify for completion. This one is pointing its firework handle to me for years awaiting a very tricky masking jobbie: This group build is the perfect opportunity to get it finished! Tom Krouse
I built this one about 2 years ago; difficult, but very, VERY sharp once done! Tom Krouse
mgbooyv8
You are right, Tom. That's why I continue on this one. Hi Guys, Masking and spraying has been done. I photocopied the masks in the kit, put a row of masking tape on a piece of glass and glued the copied masks on the tape. The curved patterns were cut out using shapes from a Burmester set as a guide (Old draughtsmen know what is is! ). The masked mode looked like this: Ofcourse, contrary to masking, spraying was done in a couple of minutes. The result was this:
mgbooyv8
And here is another view: After that, the edges needed some touching up. Part of the decals have been placed now. The model is starting to look very sharp! Pictures to follow. The decals are not complete. Below the underwing racing number 6 the horizontal line is missing. I also had the feeling an additional black line had to be added to the belly. The drawing in Wiggy's thread (in progress forum) confirmed this. I looked closer at the pictures in a book on these racers. In a head-on shot, the belly line can be seen. I'll make this from stock decalstrip. Let's hope, the resurrected Williams Brothers considers completing the decals, including the missing curved patterns on the wings. That would make life soo much easier.... Stay tuned! mgbooyv8
Thanks, Gregory! On your request, some in progress photos of the decalling: Still to be added: The white pinstripes on engine cowling and wheel spats, the missing stripe on the belly and the black and white flash in front of the canopy. But the latter has to be sprayed first, as the decal extends over it. That requires 5 layers: - the aluminium colour of the interior, - the Revell 75 undercoat - the Humbrol matt red undercoat - the Humbrol gloss red final coat - the Model Master Ferrari Red final coat. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? How come? Many moons ago I started painting it. First my usual grey undercoat, then matt red and finally gloss red from Humbrol. But somehow, I was not happy with the red colour. When I attended Scale Model World in 2007, the nice guy of the SIG racing and record aircraft showed me a stunning model of the Bulldog. He had used Model Masters' Ferrari Red and it looked very convincing. So I decided to do a respray in the same colour, and I'm very happy with it. As far as I know, the original shade of paint has never been determined, so any nice shade of red will do. The pictures that exist show different tonal variations of the red, compared to the black paint, but that is caused by different types of films. The aircraft was repaired and modified several times in its short lifetime, but never seems to have received a totally new paint job. Well, the annoying thing is that red paint is very translucent, so I have to spray all layers to the canopy as well to avoid colour differences with the rest of the airframe... . After that it's touching up time and adding the final bits. Did I tell you the wing struts have very nice sink holes? Cheers, Peter

Ted Barrett
Hi Peter, Great job!!! The modern day Reno racers are pretty neat, but you can't beat the looks of the Thompson Trophy planes!!! mgbooyv8
Thanks, David and no worries , I still have a life.. A small update today. The canopy has been sprayed and I deceide to make a new instrument panel. It's about the only thing you'll see through the canopy and the decal was not very convincing. The decal is used as a guide, though. Next jobs: paint the instrument panel, close the canopy and continue decalling. In spite of my previous plans to keep the canopy removable, the fit is such that permanent fixture is a better option..... Stay tuned!
