LSP_K2
Hey, fellas, I'm just now going down the road of gathering various bits of information for a 1:32 F-4E Phantom (Tamiya) that I hope to be starting this winter. So far, I can't seem to find that Aires ever did a 'pit set for it, only Black Box, is that correct? I'm actually quite OK with BB, as I've owned several of their sets, and find them all to be quite excellent, but was just curious if there were others, and/or what's the preferred favorite. Thanks a bunch,
Tony T
Gary of GT Resin used to do a late F-4E cockpit (Arnie mod for a slatted wing). For Vietnam era you can probably use a regular F-4D cockpit (not the Avionix Pave Phantom D set). I like the Tamiya parts tarted up with Eduard pre-painted etch. Guest Maxim
Avionix make a really nice cockpit for it.
LSP_K2
Avionix make a really nice cockpit for it. Right, I almost always refer to Avionix as Black Box.
LSP_K2
I'm also already kicking back and forth between Aires and Wolfpack regarding the exhaust, but suspect I'll go with Aires, if for no other reason than cost, as they both look just gorgeous. BloorwestSiR
K2, if you want I have spare Eduard burner cans as well as the first gen GT Resin ones if you're interested. I've also heard that the Avionix 'pit is closer to that of a late D but can't recall where I got that from. Carl LSP_K2

Luca
Gary of GT Resin used to do a late F-4E cockpit (Arnie mod for a slatted wing). would it be good for a F-4F ICE also?
chuck540z3
I'm also already kicking back and forth between Aires and Wolfpack regarding the exhaust, but suspect I'll go with Aires, if for no other reason than cost, as they both look just gorgeous. The Sierra Hotel exhaust set is the very best ever made and unlike Aires, they actually fit the kit. Sierra Hotel is a frustrating vendor because they never have any stock, but it appears they do right now here: http://sierrahotelmodels.webs.com/32700 BTW, the Avionix pit is quite good, but the fit is very tight so there will be lots of trimming and sanding to make it fit correctly. Don't know about the Wolfpack exhaust but the Aires are way undersize for Tamiya... I always used GT, they're perfect flushfit. Dan. thierry laurent
would it be good for a F-4F ICE also? In one word:no. Tony T and Luca
jmel
There really is no cockpit set available for an F-4E, with the exception of the Cutting Edge update set from last century and the GT resin set. Black Box has an incorrect F-4D front instrument panel and US Navy seats. As for the exhaust, I'll second Chuck's recommendation on the Sierra Hotel. They are outstanding and are the correct diameter. Jake LSP_K2
Tony T
That's why I think the pre-painted etch approach is best. Eduard metal and some scrap work wonders. It really comes down to era. The Tamiya F-4D/E cockpit is really pre Mod 566, i.e. Vietnam ca.1967-1972, so is actually better than any resin if you want a Hanoi hustler or War of Attrition Cairo boomer. Although the F-4EJ edition's rear IP is better. Yes, the rear bulkhead of the Tamiya cockpit is not vertical with a pile of crap tucked away around the rear seat, like the real thing, but you barely notice unless sniffing around with a pen torch - it's not like a modern jet with a great clear bubble over the 'pit. BloorwestSiR
I'd have to agree with Tony that the Eduard PE set works well in the kit tub. Here's my F-4E cockpit that I'm currently working on for the USAF 70th GB: Carl Edited September 22, 2017 by BloorwestSiR Whitey
