LSP_K2
Aside from a couple of antennas, are there any substantial differences between the standard D and Pacific D kits?
Juggernut
The pacific P-61D/K kit includes some ordnance if memory serves, the Aeroproducts prop, certain fuselage panels for the F-6 variant and omits the early (filletless) tail. There may be some other additions/omissions but I think I've got the major ones covered. Edited January 17, 2016 by Juggernut

LSP_K2
OK, it looks like I can easily do my 21st FG VLR Mustang using the standard kit then. Is there any special radio gear in the Pacific kit?
Juggernut
I don't believe there is anything special in the Pacific Mustang kit as far as radio's are concerned. I do know that the kit provides the Detrola used for long range navigation within the United States. I don't know if the Detrola (navigational aid) was used in the PTO or not. I know it was not used in Europe. If you see the aerial between the canopy and the tail of a P-51D/K, it was most likely the Detrola or something very similar. I have seen photos of Mustangs with what looks to be an ADF loop on their spines. It looks like Tamiya provides this antenna as I see it on the recce variant in the kit. I do not know what the radio is or where it was located though. The standard radio package for the P-51D (of later production blocks) was the SCR-522 (if memory serves). I think that was line-of-sight communications/navigation though. I'd have to do some more research on those VLR Mustangs and what those dual antennae were and how they were used. I also think those Pacific Mustangs of the later production blocks may have had the battery located in the engine compartment vs. behind the pilot. My references are packaged away so I cannot be more specific than that right now. My apologies. Somebody (like Tourist) may come along and color in the missing information. LSP_K2
Well, the specific Mustang that I have in mind, did have the twin blade antennas, that much seems certain, as well as the one in front of the inner main gear doors. Whether it had the odd antenna on the tail is anybody's guess, and the battery cables (under canopy) do show in one photo, along with some peculiar looking gizmo behind the pilots headrest. mhorina
One item in the P-51D/K Tamiya kit that is in no other kit that I am aware of are the 110 gallon teardrop shaped under wing gas tanks. And while they are included in the kit the wooden sway braces used with them are not included. Mike West has/ had these tanks and the sway braces in his list. LSP_K2
Thanks for that info, Mike, I appreciate it. I haven't really decided what style of tanks I'd prefer yet. Oddly enough, none of the Tamiya Mustangs have been reviewed here yet, so when I get my hands on a kit, I'll be sure to do a review then.

LSP_K2
Also notice the canvas wheel well liner visible as the boot over the main gear leg. Yea, I saw that. And I also saw (not for the first time, either), the taped over guns. While this practice seems as common as dirt on types like the F4U, I was not all that sure that Mustangs had it done too, though it makes perfect sense to do so. LSP_K2
I like the silhouette of the Catalina in the background too. Vandy 1 VX 4
LSP_K2
While browsing through my ADH "How to" book on the Mustang, I stumbled upon something I thought might be of interest to some here; the Mustang references suggestions at the end of the publication. Charles was the one of course that set the tone for our own references library here on LSP (no small database it is either, I must say), and seeing his name in print again made me realize just what a valuable asset he truly was to our hobby. 98Wrangler
With the use of the plywood, did they remove the normal sway braces as there are none visible in the front of the wing station?
mhorina
If I recall correctly there are what appear to be ropes/cord or? that connect the braces to each other. 1 fore and another aft. Running over the top of the tank. While looking at various photos the braces are never seen alone on the aircraft but are placed on the ground under the wing. Probably bevel edged at least on 1 edge and tightened up on the tank by those devises. And leave when the tanks are dropped. Mike Horina
