LSP_Kevin
Kev, looking good mate. I can't figure out how to paste the image but if you google Ryan STM RAAF the first option has info on all Aussie Ryans and there is a photo of A50-12, definately black spinner Ah, cool - thanks Brent! I was figuring either black or red. Was hoping for red to be honest, but now I know! Kev

LSP_Kevin
Just a small update this one guys, and a bit of a plea for advice. I've just been painting the yellow undersides with Model Master Insignia Yellow, and while it seemed to be laying down OK, I started to notice quite a rough finish developing, which I'm now going to have to polish out, and possibly strip altogether. The issue seems to be that I thinned the paint with generic lacquer thinner, and I'm now assuming that this isn't the most compatible diluent. So my question, for those of you who use Model Master enamels, what do you thin it with? Kev
dennismcc
Hi Kev I thin my MM enamels with Xtracolor thinners (XDTT) normally 50:50 mix airbrushed at 10-15 psi. Cheers Den
LSP_Kevin
Hi Kev I thin my MM enamels with Xtracolor thinners (XDTT) normally 50:50 mix airbrushed at 10-15 psi. Cheers Den Thanks Den. Impossible to get out here unfortunately! Do you know what type thinner it is (mineral spirits, lacquer-based, etc)? I'm going to try white spirits next, though I'm tempted to give Mr Color Thinner a go too. After those two it's plain old turps! Kev
Simmo.b
Hi Kev, Pretty sure I used Tamiya enamel thinner, not sure what Eric used, I'm sure he will let you know Cheers Brent
LSP_Kevin
Hi Kev, Pretty sure I used Tamiya enamel thinner, not sure what Eric used, I'm sure he will let you know Cheers Brent Thanks Brent. I don't normally use much enamel paint, and those that I do use occasionally thin OK with generic lacquer thinners, so I figured it would be OK for the Model Master stuff too. Anyway, I'll sand back the roughness once it's dry and try again with something else. Kev
Out2gtcha
Model Master Enamels = Mineral Spirits. Its all I use, and lays down beautifully each time for me. + MS is pretty cheap (at least around here) I believe Ive used lacquer thinners just once or twice to thin MM enamels, and it ended in disaster for me. Im not sure what went wrong, but it turned the paint into gloop and completely clogged my air-brush. I switched back to the much cheaper mineral spirits and havnt tried thinning enamels with lacquer thinner since. Old Dog
I use lacquer thinner for all model master stuff except the gloss colors which will as Brian mentioned turn them to goop. For those I use mineral spirits. That said the lacquer thinner may be causing the paint to dry too quick causing your rough finish. I think mineral spirits would be a good next choice ! Heavens Eagle
Why not use the MM thinner? When airbrushing I find that using the MFG thinner tends to keep from making FUBARs. I only wsh the old Floquil DioSol were still available. That stuff worked better than about anything else.
Out2gtcha
I've used MMs thinner before and it does work well with their paints (as you would expect) but my main issue is that for me, MS works equally as well but it's about 1/10th the price. I think in K1s situation it's more that the MM MFG thinner is likely not available where he is.
LSP_Kevin
That said the lacquer thinner may be causing the paint to dry too quick causing your rough finish. Yep, I suspect you're right! Why not use the MM thinner? I think in K1s situation it's more that the MM MFG thinner is likely not available where he is. I'm not really sure if it's available or not to be honest. It's not available from my primary online supplier, but it could possibly be available at one of the big hobby shops in town. I only get to one of those 2 or 3 times a year. So I have to go with what's readily available, and I don't really want to stock an entire bottle of specialist thinner for a single jar of paint! dennismcc
Hi Kev, I have used white spirit as a thinner in the past with MM enamels and Humbrol, as most of my painting is with Xtracolor I always have a stock of their thinner to hand so that is what I normally use. LSP_Kevin
Thanks Den. Once the paint has cured and I've had a chance to rub it back, I'll give the white spirits a try. Kev
