  1. Hi guys!

It's been a while since I posted here last, been kind of busy with work, health and life issues in general.

Anyways, I've had this kit for about a week now and finally found the time to post it.

It came from Emodels.co.uk in the UK and took 3 days to get to me.  Great service!

  2. The Thunderbird F-16 crash-landed sliding on its belly to a stop.

The photos show it lost the nose and canopy but otherwise shows little damage.

Of course the damage may be more extensive to those doing the inspection on site.

I think it's probably cheaper to replace it with one from the Bone Yard in Arizona than to try to restore this aircraft.

  3. Nice haul, Howard! I take it that the plusmodel Warning Star is a rebox of the Heller kit?

    Kev

Kev, I honestly have no idea.  All I know is that this special edition is the one with resin and (I think) PE parts.

I got interested in this aircraft after reading an article on SAM magazine on this kit.

  4. It's been a while since I posted here.  Just too busy with doctors and work!

Anyway... I had a busy weekend this past weekend as my model club was hosting Noreastcon 45 at The Museum of American Armor

    in Bethpage, NY.

It was a fun show with some impressive looking tanks and other AFV's.  Probably one of the best shows in a while.

    I picked up some stuff:

  5. Just commissioned this puppy at work yesterday :)

And first trial print (cylinders for the Wright J6-9 for the Travel Air Mystery Ship). The pen is a standard 0.5 mm lead to give you the scale.

(Had also received my T-28 on wednesday. Very nice, although I personally feel the Wright engine will benefit from some replacement. Not the Vector R-1820 as it is wrong - uneven angular distribution of the cylinders around the crankcase -. Methink I will design a new engine and print it ;) )

    Hubert

    Hi Hubert, nice work!

    Just sent you a PM.

  6. I'm working on the Revell kit right now.  At the very least the Merrit kit isn't in horrible red plastic! :D

I am looking forward to the local hobby shop getting these in stock so I can have a try.  The Revel kit is okay but a very old tooling and while it builds easily It is a bear to try and get looking good.

Though I bet the Merrit kit will be close on $90 Aus and I can get the Revell kit for less than $40 Aus!

The SE5a will be out soon, so fingers crossed maybe Merrit will do a whole range in 1/24 little they have done with there 1/35 mini subs/ MTB's

    Dan

Dan,  the SE5A has been out for a while.

    Both kits sell for $59.99US.

  7. As I've said (many times) before, the B-17 was one of HK's first projects.  They forged ahead and did it based on what someone told them were good drawings, which it turns out were absolutely ABYSMAL drawings (those in the Aero Detail book from Japan).  There is literally nothing about them that's even a little bit B-17 shaped.  A few people were sent CAD renders and there was an all hands on deck response to try to get HK good information to correct the CAD.  To HK's credit, most of the problems were fixed, but some bugaboos remain as an inevitable consequence of the original problems.

And as I've said (many times), HK learned a very hard lesson from that experience, which is why newer projects have been done with the input of people who actually know what they're talking about.  The group of folks involved in the Spey Phantom probably have as much knowledge of the Phantom between them as anyone who didn't work in St. Louis for McDonnell Douglas (and in fact, one of them *did* work for McDonnell Douglas, on the Spey Phantom!).  And the designer is a highly skilled professional with a strong passion for aircraft and for his job as a kit designer.  He's listening to the input of the assembled experts, and the result is going to be a kit that will be breathtaking (initial CAD certainly bears that out).

This stuff isn't nearly as easy as a lot of modelers seem to think.  Just because you have a CAD design doesn't mean it's accurate by definition.  It literally takes a village...  One person, no matter how talented, can't possibly do everything required to produce a really outstanding product.

    J

Maybe they should've gone straight to Boeing for original drawings and visited a few museums to see for themselves and research the real thing rather than relying on hobbyist to send them pictures and do the research for them.

  8. Well.... the issue with the circumference of the nose, to me, is not a big deal.

I figured that the problem would be there with the "F" models as well since it would probably require HK to make a new mold to correct this and, as I've been told, making a mold for an injected model costs a lot of money and I don't think HK cares that much to make such an investment.

What I do worry about is the PE set for the cockpit.

Does the "F" model has the same IP as the "G" model?

Was the problem with the PE IP from Eduard corrected?

I remember there was a problem with the IP for the "G" off register when it came out.

I just wonder if this was corrected.  Those PE sets aren't cheap!
