On the WWI birds, pretty easy - I use a strip of tape along the top fuselage side edge and then have non-adhesive paper to cover the decals themselves. on others, the same technique - a narrow strip of adhesive tape and then a post it note or paper towel or a piece of paper (often a page from a Dilbert Daily calendar - 365 pieces of 5x5" paper!).
