BloorwestSiR
Brian, I forgot I had this but here are the colour conversions for the TiE if you need them. http://www.mech9.com/2015/03/172-tie-fighter-construction-manual.html?m=1 There are relevant pages on the site for the other TiE kits that you have. Out2gtcha
Lots and LOTS of parts to paint with my own Tie Fighter gray! I really didnt like the super light gray that comes OOB for the Tie Fighters, and thought it actually more appropriate for the Death Star surface over a Tie Fighter exterior. In the end, you can see the difference between the OOB gray and my gray: Anywho, with doing two of these things, it just seemed to MORE than double the parts to paint, but I know thats not possible.................it just FELT like that! All the parts for both fighters were laid out, and painted in my Tie Fighter gray mix. I really like the way the blue/gray mix came out. IMHO, looks much more appropriately sinister for an Imperial war machine. The detail (even in these smaller 72nd scale kits) in these new gen Bandai kits is utterly amazing: Next up, it was time to grunge things up! I wanted a well used Tie Fighter and his wing-man so I decided that doing an oil wash of lamp black oil thinned with Japan Dryer for ease of drying was the best way to achieve the look I wanted. I applied the mix, and just like oils over acrylics on figures, the oil tended to stay exactly where it was put. I then took some Q-tips/cotton buds dipped in mineral spirits and went over the surface after an hour or two with minimal pressure. You can see here the before and after: At this point, really all that was stopping me from getting the painting stage fully completed, was getting the glass painted. Bandai gives you a choice of pre-colored "open" windscreen/shield and roof panel, OR the same parts made from clear plastic. However, the kit does not include paint masks. Even though this is a "light" build, and is for fun and MoJo building, I still could NOT have no glass, as to me, it really comes off quite toy like without something in there. Now I wanted some actual glass in my models, but I wasn't planning on spending a ton of time nor money to get it done. A company out there called Green Strawberry that does a ton of Sci-Fi stuff, makes all sorts of paint masks...................including a set for the 1/72nd Bandai Tie Fighter. However, the mask set is $14.00 USD on their site, and can generally be had on line from $12.50 to nearly $20.00. Taking into account the cheapest option, and doubling that, id be at $28+ with tax and shipping in the end, which would be like buying a whole 3rd Tie Fighter kit. So.................I made some patterns off of the clear plastic parts that came with the kit, scanned them into my Silhouette Studio program, and made my own masks, just opting to use micro masking tape for the roof glass: MORE................... Out2gtcha
Here is the end result of the wash: I also got the main bodies assembled and washed: Finally, for tonight's update, I got the base painted. Really this is just the OOB plastic done with some imaginative "gizmology painting". Nothing major really, but just a couple minutes to spruce things up and pick the detail out : For the purposes of my Tie pilot and his wing-man the Bandai bases actually can lock together, which will be cool for a dual Imperial Tie Fighter display, and hopefully make things a bit more stable: All for tonight ladies, catch you when your older! Gazzas
That looks brilliant, Brian. I'm going to try using the mineral spirits after oils, as your result looks amazing! Gaz Out2gtcha

BloorwestSiR
Looks great Brian! The Green Strawberry masks usually include two canopy masks but yours look great. One thing to watch out for is Bandai plastic is known to crumble if you use too much mineral spirits or let it pool, especially on bare plastic. I haven't experienced it myself but have seen it happen to others. Carl Out2gtcha
Out2gtcha
Thanks gents! Carl, I think I actually remember hearing about that somewhere. Bandai seems to use a lot of different types and consistencies of plastics, so I can see how some may react. Fortunately, I only used the technique on bare plastic on the bases with no adverse effects.
