April 12, Greek media reported.

The Mirage 2000-5 jet crashed on Thursday afternoon in the Aegean, 9 miles northeast of Skyros island, Greece's Proto Thema English edition reported.

“So far we know that an aircraft of our airforce has gone missing, which has probably fallen and at the moment we have launched rescue crews to locate our pilot. There is a serious concern on the island, since we all want our pilot to be safe. We know that the aircraft was part of an operation to intercept Turkish jets but the incident is not related to the operation,†Proto Thema quoted Skyros's mayor Miltiadis Chatzigiannakis as saying.

The jet was one of two from the Hellenic Air Force that was involved in an earlier interception of a Turkish jet that had violated Greek air space, Proto Thema and XX reported. The Turkish military said that Turkish jets were not in the region when the crash occurred, Millyet reported.

Last May, another Greek Mirage 2000 crashed near Skopelos island after malfunctioning during a training exercise. The pilot of that aircraft ejected and survived.

At the time, Defense World reported that Greece had placed a $1.1 billion order for 15 new Mirage 2000-5 MKs in August 2000, as well as upgraded 10 existing Mirage 2000EGMs

Hmm, interception, chasing, near misses, what have you, these manoeuvres are always tricky, but when something like this happens, it sucks....RIP!

there were 2 Mirages went up to intrecept 2 THK F-16s violating the greek airspace. After this (they never ingage the THK F-16s because these are already turned back home)  they were at the landing pattern at Skyros AB...9 miles away....low overcast and fog gave no visibility..he was No1 and gave the order to fly under the clouds to see better...No2 lost contact at 500 ft. who knows...we have to wait or the HAF results

+  Fl. Capt. George Baltadoros (34) with 900 hours on the 2000-5. RIP

oh yes there IS bad weather over the aegean....

The ILS antenna on the 2000 is under the nose in front of the nose wheel. ILS can theoreticaly bring you down until touch down, but in the case of 2000 pilots take over at ca 200ft.
