Airfix 1/24th Fw-190 F-2

Hello. I present my completed Airfix 1/24 FW190 F-2 for inspection. I started this kit back in October 2022 with great ambitions to super detail the engine and other areas. However a number of disasters (of my own making) occurred along the way which, together with an awareness of my limited skills, resulted in a change of plan and all panels being firmly glued in.

I wouldn't be surprised if Airfix release this in the classic range during 2025 but there are a number of shortcomings with the kit (in my opinion) that are worthy of mention and which I have attempted to correct in this build:

  • The tailwheel needs to be lowered to be more representative of the real thing.
  • The riveting is massively overdone.
  • There is a lack of detail (for a kit of this scale) to the cockpit, engine and undercarriage bay.
  • A wing dihedral needs to be added.
  • The forward rake of the undercarriage needs to be corrected.

For aftermarket parts it was Airscale to the rescue - Cockpit Instruments, Seatbelts and Wheels. Other than that there isn't very much choice. I had to use the very old kit decals because I couldn't really find any suitable masks or decal sets to replace them.

Apologies for the picture quality. I'm really not a photographer and don't have the equipment for it. Maybe at some point I will try to take better quality images.

Thanks for sharing.

I agree that better photos would be a bonus because the cammo blends in with the busy backgrounds in a few images.

Have you considered draping a plain cloth, towel, what have you over a dining chair?

The model can sit on the seat base and the pillow case, sheet etc draped over the backrest would provide a simple, plain backdrop that could show your model better. (Or place two chairs side by side for a broader background).

HTH

Cheers

I like it Bonkin..….and you’re a brave man even attempting it.

I’ve got two in the stash, but never had the courage to start one!

It's not that bad of a kit to be honest... just a product of its age. Also I think if you're happy taking on the Mossie you'd be fine with this one.

Thank you Mike.

Very nice build, you did a great job painting and weathering the model!

Cheers Ernest... I have read that the LW ground crew would clean the aircraft a lot - but I like a good weathered look and I figured that on the Eastern front these aircraft were being worked very hard - so maybe not a lot of time for cleaning.

Cheers Geedubbelyer but I think my problem is more to do with a lack of a decent camera. I think the lens on my phone might be scratched because not many of the pictures are very sharp unless the light is really good. I did take a couple more of it (under brighter light) in my display case...
