Work on the outer machine guns. The kit offering is a bit basic:

but the Master brass replacements are worthwhile:

The wing leading edge is quite a complicated affair right now and the wing camera will make it more so:

I have opened out the back of the landing light area to make it look more closely like this:

Should be fun getting all that fitted nicely!

Nice work Max, it's looking great!

Something about the actual aircraft images bothered me - it is the exhaust flame glare sheilds. To me, they look like the front and aft trailing edges of the plate are angled, and not 90 degree 'square cut'. I checked out some other internet images as reference and it appears so (hopefully, this will be a very easy fix for someone of your prodigious talent!).

I've had "time off for good behaviour" with "Immy time", so ON WITH THE WINGS!!  Carpe Diem!

I got the best dry fit that I could, sanding and knife work then glued the port upper wing to the fuselage in three stages; aft wing root then time to dry, forward wing root ditto, and finally middle section.  Gentle pressure from underneath at the third stage ensured a tight fit:

Yep, there's going to be a minimum of sanding and filling at that "L" junction toward the front, but just a smidgeon.  The starboard side was just as easy:

with the same area needing some attention.  But all in all, a good result.

The dihedral I hear you cry!!   Be calm....all's good.  The join to lower and upper needs some prep when the top wings are solidly set:

These gaps of course will be much reduced when glue and pressure are applied, so no worries there either.

A little time this morning to get some idea of what lies ahead, with time to ponder:

The fit isn’t as bad as these pictures make it look, holding with one hand and snapping with t’other gives a slightly false impression. However, some judicious sanding is going to be needed in the right places to achieve the optimum fit with the least amount of filling and sanding. And a couple more lovely Warmwell Hurribomber shots:

A quick update on the upper surface finish.
The peeling effect was sensibly fine-tuned by adding the green paint here and there to reduce the blotched effect and at the same time trying to keep some sense of credibility.
I took care NOT to degrade the hinomaru as I guess there’s a certain mystique surrounding it. You see paint peeling everywhere on Japanese planes except on the hinomarus which were kept pristine.

The engine cowling is permanently installed. White painted torpedo guides added.l

I wrongly added the homing loop antenna which shouldn’t be there as AI-316 and most Kates during the Pearl Harbor and Ceylon raids flew with their radios and mast antenna removed.

Border gave some attention to the gunsight for torpedo launching. It was present on every Kate even on bombing missions.

    Glasshouse dry-fitted.

The rectangular window on both sides of the fuselage gave some natural light to the observer’s station.

Tank filler caps painted red. I added the protruding device in front of outboard filler cap which indicates that the landing gear is down and locked.

    Serial and plane data

Oil, fuel and ordnance data table on the cowling.

Next time we’ll deal with the undersides.

    HB252 reacted to Marcin_Matejko in Brown B-2 „Miss Los Angeles” 1/32
    Hello everyone
I recently started a new modeling project, a Brown B-2 race plane:

I make the model from scratch using traditional polystyrene processing methods. Based on these drawings:

I carved some elements from fragments of other models that I managed to fit. For example, I made wings from the upper wings of a Fiat CR.42 by Smer, in a scale of 1/50. In my plastic scrap I found an unused front from an alternative version of the 1/32 Williams Bross Firecracker, which I managed to fit to the Brown. I cut out various fragments from four halves of hulls from the Black Widow P-61, probably made by Monogram in 1/48 scale and glued them together slightly differently to create a base for the hull. I made a propeller cap from a 1/72 scale Corsair fuel tank. A wheel of unknown origin found in plastic scrap was used for the chassis. The rest was made of polystyrene plates of various thicknesses. Yes, this project can easily be considered modeling recycling.

To connect all the elements of the model together, I made a special mounting base from cardboard. It allowed for the mutual adjustment of the position of individual elements relative to each other and maintaining the appropriate geometry of the whole.

Then I cut off the engine cover to create a characteristic ventilation gap between the hull and the cover.

I made the chassis legs from plastic reinforced with steel wire.

I decided to open the top of the fuselage to show the internal structure in the model

I would also like to show the engine because it looks interesting

Since no company offers a miniature of this engine, I decided to make it myself. But to make it easier, I drew it as a 3D model.

I also started modifying the engine cover.

And I also started doing the inside of the fuselage

    To be continued

    wow, so much interest!
Thank you all for coming here and for the encouraging comments.
the idea of throwing in a bit of electronics is a small thing, we'll see in the end if it's worth it (in any case a small thing, I decided to avoid motorized propeller and position lights).

while I'm playing with the lights, I'm thinking about something about this specific aircraft: given that you can't distinguish the black of the lower surfaces from that of the engine cowling, it seems strange to me that by having to autarchically "nightize" an airplane born as a daylight fighter you use two distinct colors.
I mean, supposed that the upper naca was black as the lower upper wing, I find the lower part interesting: why go so hard, over the entire lower surface, if the cowling had been previously camouflaged? It makes me think that instead it was all bright yellow, as it was in many contemporary CR42s. in this case it makes sense to dirty it so heavily, maybe with green (and pheraps with anothe color) not wanting to make the hood all black. so I wonder, in this sense, if the base wasn't in bright yellow... what do you think about that?

while we're thinking, I've moved forward a little: I've given up on the motorized propeller and position lights, but do we want to put a couple of lights in the cockpit? the only one I found in the manual was adjustable, fixed on the left wall. and here it is, a ducted nanoled like the ones I put on the 262. here the resistor is 330 ohm, while for the subalar ligts I used 470 ones.

there should also be a light on the compass, which is right under the collimator, so... I don't know how much will be seen, objectively. In the meantime I have prepared them, then we'll see (or not see).

having established that the searchlights can work, I took care of housing the contacts and resistors in the lower wings, making the cables come out so that they emerge into the fuselage.
To power all the lights you only need two 1.5 batteries, or a mobile phone power supply. the idea would be to join all the contacts in the fuselage and then have the two poles come out from under the wheels, thanks to the faired landing gear. Fingers crossed, I'm trial and error.

To make the painting job easier I thought they could be detachable, a convenience at no cost.

despite the large scale, it is still a minimalist sesquiplane, so I had to reduce the internal thickness of the wings a little to comfortably accommodate the resistors. and voilà, ready.

yes, but what about classic modeling? here it is, wait a moment... a bit of paint and dry assembly of the basic cockpit structure.

and the engine under construction. just to confirm that I'm getting stoned at the speed of light, I have in order:
-lost the airbrush needle protection. disappeared, probably romantically escaping with the cockpit seat
-given too aggressive spray can aluminum, which slightly wrinkled the affected surfaces. I thought I had tested it, but no. bravo.
-I put n-thousand photo-engraved nuts, forgetting that I had stocked up on resin ones, which were decidedly more three-dimensional.

In the downtime of the above-mentioned nonsense, as well as trying to recover the self-esteem, which I think is holding the candle to the two fugitives, I riveted the few surfaces involved.

as I was saying, the plastic is soft and receptive, perfect for riveting, just less so for engraving new lines.

fortunately there are few new lines, and overall it was a quick and painless job.

the bulk is in the front part of the fuselage, the rest is practically all canvas.

and for today I would say enough.
soon scratch building of the seat belts complex, a poorly documented little medieval nightmare.

    cheers, Paolo

    The figures

I try to get the figures fit the airplane.

They are just wonderful. Face expressions, folds on their clothes, parts‘ fit — everything is very nice…

And at least they tell the story…

But I think you see the problem:

the machine guns are way too far back. This is, in my opinion, neither the kit‘s nor the figures‘ fault. Due to the material‘s thickness — of the kit‘s fuselage halves in particular— the gun ring cannot be true to scale but must be a little under scale to fit the fuselage. The figure on the other hand can‘t join in here, otherwise it would look dwarf-like.
I removed as much material from the back of the gunner as possible, but it wasn’t enough. When I run out of arguments I came to what way too many people use to come to when they run out of arguments: pure, brutal violence. I took out the scalpels…

no wonder that he cries, I cut both of his shoulders and his elbows. His bones were replaced by thread. Frankenstein is Kindergarden compared to this!

Better, much better, but not perfect. However, I can’t bend his arms even more, otherwise he would chew around on the machine gun butts.

The dark grey machine guns that you see are artscales machine guns, not the kit parts. It was an amazingly clever idea to use these when dry fitting and adjusting around: I broke the aiming circle and both ammo boxes. While I lost the first, I at least found and kept the boxes.
The gun mount is still not entirely correct, but I‘ll live with it.

Isn‘t this a canvas cover?  Fantastic! As soon as I have almost finished the model and it comes to attaching the small parts on the exterior, I‘ll cover this aera with a canvas cover made of magic sculpt…

I finished my brutal surgery by filling all the gaps with 2K sculpt, added some lost detail on the back of the gunner, sanded and primed the figures. Ready for paint now:

    Hi all,
I started Special Hobby High Tech 2 kit Tempest MK V. Its a mix of nicely done details, not worse from mainstream kits with old-time imperfections bonded with their earlier short runs - for example cockpit collides with wheel bays, wheel bays with wing halves, gaps between fuselage and wings. I will skip adding engine, its a petty but this requires cutting and trimming plastic, lot of work basically.
I found this scheme of Tempest from first years after war when RAF stationed in Germany. Fortunately Montex was producing mask for PCM containing W2-Y. Some details like bell and question mark was not provided.

I will add Eduard PE with IP and some cockpit details.

This is my idea on spinner correction, I glued plastic "core" from old droptank then poured few layers of two-component epoxy glue. When it cured I sanded and used Tamiya (thicker) and Gunze (thinner Surfacer 1200) for correcting small imperfections.

Cockpit ready for paint,  rear "wall" needs to be sanded to not expand fuselage.
