Do it if you like but the eye was not on all of the a/c in
JGr/176, the first to use the sharkmouth nose art.
Later JGr/176 transitioned to the Bf110 as ZG/76 which
wore the sharkmouth as well (where it became more well known).

tomv87 reacted to kkarlsen in PBY-5A Catalina (Cutaway)
Hi Tom, that's a good question. Initially I hoped to be able to see most of the details of the different compartments, without completely destroying the beautiful Catalina fuselage. Of course I will not be able to see as much as the completely open HPH cutaway kit.
I've tried to take some photos through the openings...
Rear compartment
The blisters compartment
The bunks compartment
The Engineers compartment
The Radio compartment
And the Cockpit...

First order of business after getting the fuse together was to make sure the intakes as well as the rest of the fuselage were as smooth as I wanted, so I could start the re-scribe. This panel re-scribe was not altogether difficult with the exception of the curvy panel lines around the turbo-jet intakes.
THESE nearly were the death of me...........
It was totally my fault, but I cut the opening for the intakes way too big, and consequently, had a lot of filling to do, which let to a tough re-scribe. I probably filled and re-scribed, sanded, re-filled, used Mr Surfacer, re-sanded, re-scribed and so on and so forth, probably 4 or 5 times. I got them as good as I am going to get. Its super hard to even tell where the line actually is, without holding it up to the light at a certain angle. All the filler prevents the new scribe line from being visible, so Mr Surfacer was also applied sparingly very thin over the top to actually see where I was at.
Now, I really only have the rivets around those same intakes, along the edges left to do, which will be nothing compared to scribing those panel lines around the intake.
After the main bulk of the re-scribe was done I set the model aside to work on the ground dolly. I sprayed the wooden parts with Tamiya Desert Yellow, then applied some oils thinned with Japan Drier:
Later, I will mask the fully dried wood/oil parts off, and the rest of the cart will get a coat of IJN green. Fortunately, when you thin the oils with Japan Drier or the equivalent, the drying time of the oils goes from weeks or days, to just a few hours. These were dry to the touch after about and hour and a half, or two hours. They should be cured by today, since I let them dry overnight.
I then set the cart parts aside to dry, and picked the fuselage back up. This time around, it was time to get the little F-104-like wings attached. There really is not a whole lot to these, but Radu provides a very nice gluing system for the little wings, which consists of a large square or resin sticking out of each wing that slides very positively into the fuselage, and allows for secure gluing, and also provides the correct dihedral.
Gluing the wings in was a simple matter of slathering the internal square portion with very thick CA and sliding them in, as the wings themselves do have a great fit to them, especially for a short run resin kit.
*DISCLAIMER*
Radu specifically states not to use CA on this kit, and recommends other types of glue. I chose to ignore this, as I have a vast amount of experience with the "Zap-a-Gap" brand of medium CA on resin kits, and have had excellent luck with it. This time around was no different...................
The ZaG CA stays a bit flexible and does not tend to turn brittle, and I proved this to myself on accident when I dropped the little Ohka off the bench after smoothing the fuselage out. just a dent I had to fill a bit, but no cracking. The CA also provides an excellent filler, as it glues things together, kind of a two birds with one stone kind of thing.
I cant recommend anyone build one of these with CA if its not Zap-a-Gap, but from my perspective, it has worked out a real treat.
The little Ohka is starting to come together now, and looks a bit more like what its supposed to. Even still, its not a very big model in any respect. After the wings were fitted I sanded them up to the fuselage cuff and then added some 1500 Mr Surfacer:
This looks a bit more rough than it actually is in person, and since I have even attempted to smooth the panel line out more with some 1500 Mr. Surfacer. I still have an overall coat of primer to put on the Ohka yet, so that may give me the insight I need, if there is more work to be done on these
Although hard to see, the re-scribe actually turned out pretty decent. I also have since smoothed out the wing roots after adding a bit of Mr Surfacer to smooth the transition out:
Tiz all for now gents and gentettes.
Till ur all older!
Cheers
