Advice for first time simple resin casting?

Recommended Posts

I have a relatively simple part I need to make a few copies of, it's a P-51D seat pad that Mal Bedford graciously gave to me a few years ago.  I have used one of the pads he gave me, and would like to make a few resin copies for myself to use on future builds.  I have never tried any type of resin casting before, and would appreciate any advice and/or feedback.   It's simple part, like this one:

Thank you for looking!

Hi Tim, I actually have 2 copies in 1/32, I just need to make a mold of them and recast some for my personal use.:D

Gotcha. I've had good luck replicating small parts using Smooth-On products. Specifically these: https://amazon.com/gp/product/B00ATDV5BQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://amazon.com/gp/product/B06XJDF8FR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can find them other places besides Amazon, of course. I also use a drop of black resin dye that I got at Hobby Lobby to make the resin gray, as I don't like it white. I've also seen some folks use clay to make simple molds, but I haven't tried that. This resin is very easy to use, just pour it slow so the bubbles will escape while doing it.

I miss Mal, too. If anyone knows how to reach him, tell him we want him to come back!!

He hasn't visited here in quite some time, and seems no longer active on Facebook either. I hope he's OK.

A good way to save time and money to cast simple parts is to use re-usable rubber. I'm using that one and this allowed me to make a single copy of all parts of an Isracast resin set I never succeeded in finding:

If you're not satisfied by your mold you just have to recreate it from the same rubber. And this can be done in 15 minutes! I love it so much I got 4 sets to make larger molds!

Agreed, that looks great! I'm gonna have to give that a try, too
