Mosquito MK 39

Update number 4

Well it has taken a while but I have finally managed to glaze this 'greenhouse' nose. felt at times I was building a Junkers 88 not a Mosquito!

For the internal framework I used stock plastic strips together with a scratch built photographers bench, kneeling pad and camera including support frame. The rest were additions from my spares box.

The next part was the building of the glazed framework. For the vertical frames I drilled 1mm diameter holes in the top and bottom of the nose to accept X4 plastic rods.

The more time consuming part now was to add the horizontal frames which were just cut to length and glued in between the verticals.

Once the framework was completed I painted it interior green and when dry the outside was painted in aluminium.

As each of these segments had to be a flat glazing I could not just wrap around sections of clear acetate and the gaps had to be fairly precise as although I was going to add framework on top of the acetate it would not cover any large gap. To achieve this I used Tamiya tape to cover each vertical section. Using a pencil I then rubbed the side of the lead to pickup the high spot of the frames and fuselage side. Once that was done I removed the tape and stuck that onto a piece of acetate which served as a template and protection for the clear acetate sheet. Once cut I temporarily fitted to the framework to check for alignment. This I repeated for all the 5 vertical sections.

Now that was done it was a case of marking where the horizontal frames were and cutting to length. I found it easier just to hold the acetate against the frame up to the light and mark out the frame and mark with a pencil. I would do one length at a time marking them so when cut I could match them to the correct frame aperture

I used Formula 560 canopy glue to stick the acetate panels to the framework and when completed I removed the masking tape very carefully as I did not want to accidentally remove the clear panels again.

The last part of the glazing was to add the outside framework. For this I used 1mm masking tape and spayed that aluminium. As before I used a continuous strip for the vertical sections and for the horizontals I used a continuous strip but then cut out the bits going over the horizonal frames with a sharp hobby knife

I'm now concentrating on nacelles adding the metal undercarriage and Eduard Etch not to mention lengthening the engines!

Hi Moonraker 1 - you appear to be using the bbCode version of your image links. These are no longer supported due to the recent upgrade of our forum software, which is why the images in your most recent post are not showing. Check out the following explanation I posted in General Discussion for more information:

Fixing the links in your post is actually easy! Just remove the leading [img] and trailing [/img] tags on each link, and hit enter/return as go. Your images should reappear again. I've done your first image as an example, but will leave you to do the rest. Sing out if you run into any trouble.

Nothing has changed with regard to permissions, only where the edit function is situated. Look for the ellipse icon ("...") in the top-right of your post (next to the "Author" label), and click on that. Edit is one of the options in the menu that pops up.

I saw the edit note you made about changing the links not working, and I got it too when I tried - weird! There's definitely some inconsistent behaviour going on. When all else fails, though, the 'Insert image from URL' function (available from the 'Other Media' drop-down menu, bottom right of the post edit window) seems to work. I used that to update the rest of your image links.

  • 4 months later...

Well I have skipped a few build processes and posted the finished Mosquito MK39. I've never changed a graceful swan into an ugly duckling! This started life as the 1/24 Airfix MKVI. So had to change it to a MKIVX with the longer engines, bomber canopy and bulged bomb bay, 4 bladed props together with correcting the kit omissions and ejector pin indents etc.. Then for the MK 39, scratch built the nose and central rear turret together with other oddities that this MK had fitted. Now it's finished and I can see the full size of this, I'm glad I designed it with removable wings!
