Sorry, I do not agree, just look at photos VF-17 Corsair, from the period 11/1943 - 3/1944. I basically build models from the photos. Here are examples.

This is exactly what was done.  The red was over painted with what appears to be, intermediate blue.  I don’t know if the intermediate blue was what was called for but appears to be what was used.
