Delayar
Hi! After enquiring on this forum for some details about the P-51D Jumpin Jacques, I finaly started with the build. It is my second build in 1/32, so far I only built the Revell F-15E Demonstrator (twice actually, the first time as teenager, the second time a few years ago, see http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=49441). I usually build in 1/48, since the kits are cheaper and don't require that much space. But I could't pass the big Tamiya P-51D. Jumpin Jacques is a P-51D-20NA aircraft, and was based on the Philippines. Here is the kit with the detail sets I will be using. Eduard Interior PE Eduard Engine PE BarracudaCast cockpit details BarracudaCast diamon thread tires BarracudaCals Cockpit stencils G-Factor Landing gears HGW seat belts Eagle Strike decals So far I started with the engine. I assembled it and painted it black to prepare for some detailing. Next I will paint the nuts and bolts silver and add the ignition harnesses. Delayar
Hi! A small update. I know I am not a fast builder.... I painted the nuts and bolts and added some oil piping. In all pictures of the real engine I found, there is a device at the front of the engine, under the propeller shaft, where the two oil pipes go, but this device is not present on the Tamiya engine. As this area will be hidden anyways, I just let the pipes float freely. The same is true for the other end, where they go somewhere behind the magneto. Guest Peterpools
Markus Very nice start on your Tamiya P-51and from the looks of your AM sets, you're all set to bring her up to the next level. So far, I've built three Tamiya Mustangs - awesome kits. Only point to be aware of is Tamiya color call outs for parts of the front office, the radio deck framing and wheel wells are inaccurate. Not a biggie but it's easy to correct. Keep 'em coming Peter
Delayar
Thanks for the hints. I will use all the other great builds on this forum as a reference, so I hopefully will avoid some serious mistakes. Markus
Delayar
Hi! Here is another update. The Engine is almost finished, only the weathering is still missing. I added the ignition harnesses. Here is a picture of the intake harnes prior to installation. The main part is made from 0.9mm brass tube, where I drilled 0.6mm holes to take the leads. The ignition leads themselves are made from 0.5mm solder, glued into place with CA. The tube is a vinyl tube from a Tamiya 1/12 motorbike kit. And here is the engine with the ignition attached: the other side: And the top: There are also some parts from the Eduard PE set attached. Now I am a little bit at a loss, because I have never weathered prop engines. Do you have any tips as how to proceed? tbell
Looking good, Markus. For your engine weathering I would suggest a wash of a greyish-brown, plus some understated chipping on the bolt heads and select high points. A few oil and fuel stains using something like AK Interactive or MiG prodicts would work well, too. For a bit of inspeiration, here is a shot of Chris Wauchop's Spit IX Merlin:

Delayar
So, after a few month, there are some news. I didn't have much time during the last months, so I couldn't do much at one time, so progress was very slow. Anyway, I drybrushed and washed the engine. The oil tank was enhanced with Eduard PE and solder. Sadly, one of the fastener tabs got lost :-( The two parts glued together: The HGW seatbelts are really fiddly to get together, but they look fabolous: I will apply a wash at a later stage. I decided to add the BarracudaCast sidewalls. The cockpit parts so far: I have to add cockpit stencils to the middle part of the instrument panel. The Barracuda decals are for the later area switchplate, so I have to use some artistic license. Also, stencils to the cockpit floor have to be added and then the parts will be clearcoated. Thats it so far. I hope to make some progress in the next days. Regards, Markus DesertRat and Mal_Belford

Delayar
Time goes by... Since my last post, I had a lot of other projects going on, one of them my own wedding, so I didn't have much time to work on Jumpin' Jacques. Now, however, I hope to find more time to complete this build. The parts for the cockpit are finished. They recieved a wash and flatcoat. Here is a detailed shot of the IP: the radio and battery assembly from BaracudaCast. The bottle is made from clear sprue. The cockpit assembly without the IP: The pipe from the fuel tank was made with 1mm solder. And here is the cockpit with the IP, glareshield and gunsight in place. The gunsight is from the Baracuda set, with the transparent parts cut off from the kit parts. Right now I am working on the sidewalls of the cokpit. I also noteced a thing with the Eduard PE parts. For part V25, there are PE parts, which do not fit into the plastic part, but have to be applied "on top": Is this correct, or should I leave these PE parts off? LSP_Kevin
That's looking very nice indeed! No idea about the PE part, unfortunately. Kev
