Tamiya Spit!!

Recommended Posts

Right then.

I intend to build a Tamiya Spit and was wondering what extras to get with it! I went to look on the hannants website but as its been well advertised they have had some problems!! Or is it just worth building it as it comes?

Another thing i am wondering is, are there any decals for either 43 F Sqn RAF or 111 F Sqn RAF? Having served on 43 and currently serving on 111 I would like to do it with one of these markings.!

I know i shouldn't mention it on here but I am about to start an old 1/48 Hassagowa Phantom in 111 Sqn markings XV582 that was painted up in all black with the big 111 Sqn markings on the fin and nose. (sorry for swearing about the scale but when i got it all the money went to charity so i couldnt resist) The good thing is the very aircraft is sat outside my work so i can get as many photos as i need!

It should put me on til i get the Spitfire!!!

The kit is simply awesome as it comes out of the box.

The only thing I would suggest, is the resin cockpit door by Roy Sutherland. It comes with the escape bar as a separate piece. Tamiya molded it as part of the door, and since that is such a highly visible part (if you build it with the door opened) I think the aftermarket part is a worthwhile improvement.

Beyond that, build it OOB and enjoy it. Best model kit I have ever built.

Welcome!

There is a decal sheet by Xtradecal http://www.hyperscale.com/2010/reviews/dec...previewbg_1.htm which features a 43 Sqn plane, just post-war, and this is an e, but there is a nice e conversion from AlleyCat http://www.a2zeemodels.co.uk/spitfire-mk-i...-set-5518-p.asp which just replaces the c parts in the kit. However you could make it as per the markings of the 43 Sqn IXc in Revell's 1/48 kit http://www.revell.com/germany/aircraft/80-4554.html there is a guy on Britmodeller who makes masks for markings http://www.freewebs.com/miraclemasks/ which might be a way to go. Decals for RAF Spitfires a few and far between, sadly.

I'd buy a set of these http://www.master-model.pl/index.php?page=...=56&lang=en

The kit seat lacks the padding and the following provide a replacement;

Barracuda http://barracudacals.com/products.php?cat=13

Grey Matter seat http://www.greymatterfigures.com/index.php?p=2&id=24

Hi Andy,

At the moment I am building three Spits, I bought all the acessories and my conclusion:

If you want to display your model with the door open buy the Barracuda resin door, the detail is better and you have a much better crowbar, if you want your model with the door closed then keep the kit's door as the Barracuda door has no outside hinge detail.

Buy the Barracuda resin seat and Eduard photo-etch seatbelts (or the alternative Radu Brizan, etc, belts). The kit's photo-etch seats are in steel or something quite difficult to work with.

Buy the Barracuda (or alternative) resin wheels, I find the kit "rubber" wheels toylike.

The kit is quite complex, adding Eduard's painted PE interior adds even more work to it, Barracuda detailed cockpit is very good but the kit's rendition is quite acceptable unless you want to super detail "the office".

Happy modelling,

Rui Silva

I would say get the Alley Cat Spitfire XVIe conversion! It is awesome. Of course you would want to want to do a late/post war low back.

I have the Master barrells cannons and Barracuda parts as well, If Peter's (Airscale) spit ones are as nice as his 24th Mossie ones, then they would be highly recommended......they are all fantastic items. But a lot of the guys here have built it straight from the box and it still looks spectacular.

Oh, did I mention the Alley Cat conversion..........................

Cheers

Anthony
