ChrisS
Ray, Av8fan: Thanks for the refs! These will come in handy! Also here is a list of the folks who have suggested they might want one of the cowlings when done. We'll do a proper pre-order when we get closer to casting. ChrisS
Shaping Here I've slathered a decent amount of Mr Surfacer 500 over the mounting guide and the top of the cowling to blend in the part and help the shape a bit at the join. I'll let this dry and begin shaping with sanding sticks next.

LSP_Ray
I want at least 3, too!!! Here is the first of the photos. From the E&M manual for the F4u-4. I wager the cowl is similar in construction, just shape is different for the lower intake. First, the only drawing so far that shows some of the cowl construction: Second, don't know if it is relevant here, but the cowl flaps: More to come! LSP_Ray
More photos. First is another illustration from the F4u-4 parts manual: Note how it gives us a glimpse of stiffeners on the inside of the panels. Here is another shot of the rear of the cowl, showing cooling flaps and the reinforcing strip that goes on top of the cowl panels. This is from Aero Detail #25, "Vought F4u Corsair" and is being posted under the Fair Use rules:
LSP_Ray
More shots, also from Aero Detail (and Fair Use applies again), these show the reinforcing strips and fasteners in better detail: I think you can now see why I thought the Aber PE screw heads would come in handy! LSP_Ray
Next, what is under the panels, and may be seen from within. For one thing, it appears there are no longitudinal braces under the panels. These photos are from "Corsair: 30 Years of Filibustering 1940-1970", and Aero Series #11, "Chance Vought F4u Corsair" posted again under the Fair Use rules: You can see there is rings at each end of the panels, and a strip with no attachment points in the center of the panels, but no cross members. That leaves us with the nose...
LSP_Ray
The nose ring is the toughest. From these photos from Detail & Scale Vol.55, "F4u Corsair: Part I Xf4u through F2G" and "F4u Corsair: Combat, Development, and Racing History of the Corsair" again posted under the Fair Use rules, it appears the forward ring attaches to the edges of the engine cylinders, from which points reinforcing strips continue inside the nose cowl ring nearly right up to the front edge: In summary, the way Scott Murphy did it in his build would probably look pretty good: Hope that helps, Chris!!!
