F-4 Phantom exhaust

Recommended Posts

My main concern is the Phantoms were notorious for being "smokers". The pilots complained that you could find an F-4 from the smoke trail they left.

So how much soot would be seen in the tail pipe and exhaust feathers and what technique to use to achieve this.

The Vietnam era nozzles were quickly caked in soot, with just the pleats where the nozzles opened up wider and closed tighter being scraped soot free.

The higher EGT allowed in the very late 1970s introduced "smokeless" and the nozzles thus require the burnt metal look.
