First, don't use straight up flat" clear. Use "gloss" clear, that is flattened with the addition of X number of drops of flat. I find straight up flat clear to be too strong and cloudy. You can play around with ratios and shoot on some test subjects to see what you like. Second, a lot of modelers seem to use clear coats close to "straight up" out of the bottle or un-thinned. I don't know how they do it. I heavily thin my clear coats so that it is impossible to get orange peel or cracking or lots of other problems that come from using an application that is too thick. If you slowly mist on heavily thinned clear that is maybe 50% gloss clear and 50% flat clear, you will very subtly affect the shine of the subject matter. You can slowly add layers as you see fit until the level of dullness is what you want. It's very hard to overdo it and end up with that dusty appearance with this approach. I share this question too, what products do you use Mr Ringleheim? Ryan
  3. Tonight I wrapped up the replacement carb levers, one step closer to paint. Levers by The 3rd Placer, on Flickr Levers by The 3rd Placer, on Flickr Ryan
  4. One is bigger than the other, oh wait, no they are the same. Nice pair of models David. Ryan
  5. Thanks that's quite a compliment Tom, much appreciated. i know the endless staged construction pics are a bit long winded, but I like to take pics of the process. Good thing is I am about ready to paint many elements! Ryan
  6. In these shots I have completed most of the wing structure. Some of the parts were glues on out of sequence so I could paint in one sitting. Since these parts are in silver plastic, the detail is hard to see or perceived soft, a blast of primer reveals crisp elements. 7. Very pleased this morning as I think I have discovered why there is such a gap on the firewall at the upper portion. Note the red box outline below; the problem seems to be caused by the lower silver grey cockpit frame bottom not aligning with the light grey fuselage side wall. There is a pronounced step at this area thus dropping the firewall and creating the gap. Fire wall fix by The 3rd Placer, on Flickr The fix was easy just, flush sanding the step brought the firewall up and closed the gap. Just FYI for those experiencing the same problem....I don't think my decision to glue the sides to the fuse parts was the problem as there are distinct location holes for the silver grey parts to fit in. I think the secret to displaying these types of large models is a triangle shaped cabinet built into a corner. Still one big cabinet but not as intrusive as a huge glass box. Ryan

We would have to start finishing with automotive spray guns at some point! "Hi Alclad, I'll take a quart of your best NMF please!" Ryan

    1/32 B-29?

There could be a boxing of Enola Gay that came with the gadget and a regular boxing of the bird. And of course the X-1 mother ship, even a retool as the B-50. Ryan

Well if we are dreaming big why not bigger....the B-36 Peacemaker! We can call it the Styrene Overcast. Back to the 29 though, 53" is big for sure, but not much bigger that the 41" span of the HP 0/400. Ryan

What mainstream manufacturer will be brave enough to produce this.....? What a beast it would be. Ryan
  15. Funny story, I bought the extra head set because it came with the tool to remove the standard chisel that the unit came with. Mine came loose and I could not find a tool small enough to secure it, so bought the upgrade set. Ryan
  16. Now that I had not considered, good idea! Ryan
  17. Thanks for the info Carl, nice assembly line going on there! Ryan
  18. Very tidy Thomas, I cant wait to start mine! Ryan
  19. Hey that looks like my kit! Good show Martin. Ryan
  20. To others that have built this kit OOB, are the metal gear sets a must for this kit, or will the plastic stems do the job? Ryan
  21. I say we toss out the term Davis wing and now call it the Iain wing! Ryan
  22. Good deal Martin, may I suggest Flickr? Just click on one of my pics and it will take you to my photo stream and the site. I like it because I can upload pics right from my phone via the Flickr app. its also easy to use. Ryan
