Hi,

A new build i've started a few weeks ago.

The trumpeter kit do not seem to be as easy to build than the hasegawa one. And the riveting is a good stuff, but trumpeter always do their rivets too big and too deep. I think i will have to level them with mr surfacer or with another technique.

I will build it almost OOB, except for the cockpit, where i've add the eduard PE and some additional scratch.

As usual, i dont like the eduard color PE, as i find the color inaccurate and too much clean. So i've repainted most of them.

I've ehanced the throttle with drops of mr surfacer and paint to make the balls, added the throttle control rods. I've also added a few cables from different diameters, and made the rudder cables with EZ line and tinted them with silver gel pencil. I've tried to make this cockpit as busy as i can, as the trumpeter cockpit OOB looks pretty plain.

There is a lot of different color schemes for the cockpit : yellow-green (looks a bit greener than chromate yellow, i dont know if it is exactly the same primer), interior green, republic dark green.... I've decided to make it tri-color. It exists, there are some pictures of such a cockpit in the Mushroom production book about P-47D. So most parts are yellow green (tamiya XF-4 chromate yellow with a very few drops of X-28 park green), with the seat and map box painted interior green (gunze H-58) and the sides Republic dark green (mix gunze H-302 FS34092 with a bit of H-28 to make it a bit lighter)

The seat is all PE, very nice addition. I've add the hooks with the cables on the upper tube, even though it is not very noticeable (will take more and better pictures later). the harnesses are HGW fabric belts, with the buckles blackened with Uschi burnishing solution (do not work very well with those buckles, as it must not be 100% brass, but certainly another alloy).

Will post pictures of the engine soon.

Thank you !

The stick OOB was way too high (about the height of the top of the IP....), do i've made it shorter of about 7mm (after shooting those previous pics).

  • 3 weeks later...

Some progress :

I've close the fuselage, adjust the wing thickness (the fit is not very good with the fuse), puttyed, sanded, polished and primed in gloss black. Then polished again with micromesh (4000 to 12 000).

Then a coat (very slightly mottled to avoid a too much uniform surface) of alclad aluminium, and then masking some panels and spray of different alclad paint (white aluminium, dark alu, dural, magnesium, and so on...).

Then i've masked the areas where are the unit markings, and then painted the national markings, with custom vinyl masks i've made with my Silhouette portrait cutter. That was a bit time consuming to make the programs but now i can cut some in minutes for any aircraft, i just have to rescale them.

First, i've used a mix of blue for the US insigna blue, but i was not very satisfied. So i've repainted them (using the same masks) with a real insigna blue.

Thank you Mal !

Here are 2 pics of the very good hobbydecal stencils. They are a pain to get, but damn, it's a must have for NMF, when you cant use any finishing coat to hide the standard decals support film :

Close-ups show that trumpeter riveting is not very subtle.... I call them bomb craters !

THe DZUS are nice, though.

Thanks Peter !

Yes, the trump kit is not really a piece of cake to make it fit, but with a bit of work, it's ok.

The only thing that i really fear is the fear of the gun cowling. I'm using some turned brass guns, so i was not able to glue those cowling before painting, and i will have to glue them at the end, and the fit is not flush at all. I hope it will be acceptable.

There is no film with those hobbydecal stencils, they are dry transfers. That's why they are great for NMF !
