Finn Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 (edited) Why would they have tarps on the wings: https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/aircraft-carrier-hornet/TAHTP750hbdMAw no doubt they would be removed before flight. edit: here is another photo that have rudder covers on them to make them less colourful on the deck: https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/aircraft-carrier-hornet/9QHRucFM-lleig Jari Edited July 18, 2023 by Finn
Dana Bell Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Hi Jari, Pre-war Navy camoouflage tests suggested that even the sailors' white caps were too visible from a distance - I'm pretty sure the tarps were meant to maintain the carrier's camouflage integrity. Cheers, Dana dennismcc, D Bellis, Bill M. and 1 other 4

Cheers, Dana Thanks Dana, i kind of figured it had something to do with covering things up. Reminds me when i was stationed in West Germany, they said we should not have any white on our ball caps lest a MiG flying at 500kts at 200ft would see it and attack the base, not seeing all the green buildings, the long concrete runway, taxiways and dispersals.
