It depends on what is available. If I can find reliable drawings with dimensions— true for a lot (but not all) of Spitfire stuff, also Fokker D.VII and Albatros D.V— that becomes the source of truth. In the case of the Macchi stuff , there are lots of third party drawings in various scales but no actual original blueprints/ working drawings with 1:1 dimensions that I have been able to uncover, at least.
