Shawn M
looks great! Glad that helped as it was my ONLY shot of that aircraft, lol.
Wiggy
Hi Wiggy, Yes, the Bulldog is fun....especially the masking! Yes, you just need decal paper. As you have an inkjet printer, like most of us, you need decalpaper specifically (!!!) for inkjet printers. That paper blocks the water from underneath trying to flush away your ink. Remember to protect your prints from the water. I always use Revell gloss clear enamel laquer. Apply it by brush to ensure sufficient coverage. By the way, did you read the read the "make your own decal" tutorial by Russ here on the forum? Good luck! Cheers, Peter Hey Man, thanks for the tips. I'm gonna' give-it-a-go when I can find the correct decal paper. I checked-out your "Bulldog" over in the Group Build forum- it pasted my ears back! You really got it goin' on. That shade of RED jumps right off my monitor! I'm wondering if the topside decal ahead of the canopy will be too wide on my project as well? SO COOL to see another "Bulldog" coming together at the same time I'm struggling with mine. Kinda' helps to push me along. Wait for me at the finish line. Wiggy
Russ's Decal Making Tutorial Kev Hey Man, thanks for posting that tutorial. I'm still reading but wanted to get a "Thank You" posted. On track, Quarter Scale Wiggy
Wiggy
looks great!Glad that helped as it was my ONLY shot of that aircraft, lol. Shawn, I owe ya' one. I just couldn't make-out what was painted on the tail however, researching the whole "Bulldog" story- I knew that had to be it. Still not 100% sure about the "fine print" but the decal will be so small, it won't matter anyway! Then came the "epiphany" regarding just what was painted behind the cockpit. I've really enjoyed this build on so many levels. The best thing: this one is for me- I get to keep it when I finish! All the best, Quarter Scale Wiggy
Shawn M
you're build is a beaut! Glad I could help. I have such a soft spot for american air-racers, there is so much history to the sport and so many great characters that played rolls in it. Its sad there is no more transcontinental racing. mgbooyv8
Hi Wiggy, You're too kind! I'm wondering if the topside decal ahead of the canopy will be too wide on my project as well? I'm afraid it is. After all it's the same decal sheet with the same kit. I suggest to firstly apply the stripes on the sides of the fuselage. Apply them on one side directly after each other, so you can align them up front. The upper ones have the white edge wrapping around the wing root. When you lay the top decal on top of the fuselage, you'll find it covers too much of the wing root and will not align with the white stripe around the wing root. Ofcourse I found out while the decal was on the model so I had to cut it while wet... Anyway, I suggest to cut this decal in half just forward of the forward (red) plug and cut the forward half in two longitudinally. Then it's easy to trim to fit. You'll succeed, you've achieved so very nice results so far. And you're not far behind!!! Keep the updates coming! Cheers, Peter

So many times, I'm cutting "wet decals" as well. My decal sheet is crappy- the White stripes for the cowling shattered when they came out of the water. Just like playing some kinda' sick jigsaw puzzle board game! Choking-up the decal width ahead of the forward filler cap- how did you overcome the White stripes alignment? Perhaps cutting more of a wedge-shaped piece instead of a right angle longitudinal slice? Less overlap of the decal halves? mgbooyv8
Hi Wiggy, Yes... my white stripes also broke up. Cutting the front halve of the top decal in two more of a wedge shape pieces is indeed the way to go. I cut them too short ..... But camouflaging decal overlays and touch-ups is possible. Here's how I did it: -apply a few coats of Klear (or Future) over the touched-up and overlaid decal -sand smooth (beware not to sand through the decal) -apply additional coats of Klear to restore the gloss surface Hope this helps. Wiggy
Holy cow Peter, am I ever glad you spoke-up regarding that decal ahead of the cockpit. That thing was HUGE! Took a bit of fiddling and a little nerve but I got it to behave- AND fit. Pics coming... -Quarter Scale Wiggy
Wiggy
Progress! The decals in my Williams Bros kit were awful. Just about every one shattered coming out of the water. Nothing like playing "the wet jigsaw puzzle game" when you're trying to do a nice job. Lots of touch-up work to do but at least I'm out-of-the-woods. LSP_Paul
Very Impressive result.. Was well worth all the work you did! Your build actually inspired me to do my very first inter war era plane, an old Navy fighter. It probably wont turn out half as nice as what you've done here. The lines of the planes back then were awesome and your model sets that off beautifully. Well done. Paul
Wiggy
Wow Wiggy wow! She looks awesome mate! Kev Hey Man, glad you like my little air racer. It's comin' together- slowly. This build journey has been such a "hoot". I urge everyone to read the back story about this 1932 contender and the man who built it. I just receintly discovered Mr. Hall went on to work at Grumman and is credited with a major roll in designing the F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat and TBF Avenger! http://air-racing-history.com/aircraft/Hal...dog%20Racer.htm How cool is it to have TWO versions of the "Bulldog" being built-up at the same time here on LSP! MGBOOYV8's project has been an inspiration to me- kinda' pushes (to press or urge to some action or course) me along with my build. I've been walking in his footprints regarding overcoming some of the kit issues. Much more to follow, Quarter Scale Wiggy
