SciFi58
Hey gang! I would like to join the group build if I may. I have just the model to fail to finish in time. Sometimes I wonder if my negativity works against me but as I argue with wife all the time (she is the quintessential optimist) pessimism is the better way. The optimist is either disappointed or gets the expected. The pessimist is either prepared or happy he was wrong. If I may, I will start with my favorite war joke and very appropriate. A dinner was held to honor war veterans and a young man escorted his grandfather to the dinner. At a table with many well dressed, high society couples, a young woman asked the old veteran what he did in the war. "I was a pilot and I shot down those Fokkers!" The women gasped and some almost fainted and the men gaped in astonishment and the young man was quick to explain his grandfather. "No, no! You see the Fokker was a type of German plan, like the Junkers, Heinkel or Messerschmitt." "Messerschmitts!" the old veteran explained, "That's what those Fokkers were!" Here is my entry if my bad joke hasn't got me banned: I did start it a long time ago, assembling the four parts of the seat but even with a kit so small and so few of parts for something in the one true scale, I think that still is less than 25%. Here's hoping I can get some work down this weekend. Good Luck, All! A.Wolf Grant, whiskytngofxtrt and Kyrre

SciFi58
I've been re-modeling my model area in the basement, trying to arrange my eclectic collection of furniture in a more advantageous arrangement to store my modeling apparatus in a more organized and accessible manner. Tonight was the first time in several months I've put cement to styrene. Felt good! Here is the overall results of tonight's efforts. I'm broke right now so trying to avoid getting the Eduard set. I scratchbuilt the triangular frame on the fuselage sides. Can't wait to try painting wood grain with oils. Here is the engine coming along an the cockpit bits. Need to add some missing parts like the tachometer and the map case. Last thing I did was to destroy and lose two thirds of the yoke handle. I'll have to scratchbuilt a replacement. And thanks Will. It is my first Roden kit. Hopefully more tomorrow! Edited March 3, 2013 by SciFi58
m.robeson
Glad to see someone building this kit. Just one word of warning, though. Watch out for the decals! I built this kit a while back, and while the kit was a joy to build, the decals were a nightmare! They shattered as soon as they hit water. I guess I should have clear-coated them before using them. OldTroll
I agree on the decals. Clear-coating ALL Roden decals is now part of my routine.

SciFi58
Thanks guys! I'll clear coat them as I plan to use the kit decals and do Richthofen's mount. Boring I know but if you're only gonna do 1 Dr.1... Here is some painting on the cockpit. The wood grain effect looks better in person. I took the picture with my wife's iPad as I forgot to take my my camera downstairs. I also got the center wing together and all the caps on the pistons. Debating on how to handle the Spandau guns. My options are use the jacketed guns as are and try to bring out the detail with paint or use the unjacketed guns and cut the jackets from the jacketed guns and try to drill them out with a drill press and successively larger bits. Also, if anyone knows, Roden calls for the fabric covered interior bits to be olive drab but most pictures I can find show a yellowish white. That and some references show a seat cushion or has that just been added for comfort in a restored bird. Any thoughts? Guest Peterpools
Very nice start on the Fokker DR1 as well as being able to follow a non WNW build ... just good for the sole. Keep 'em coming
WillScarlet
I've read the Encore boxings have very GOOD decals. No personal experience, just what I've read in reviews.
SciFi58
Thanks for the encouragement , guys! Here is the cockpit coming together. I need some paint touch up and also need to detail the compass and add a clock and tachometer. That and scratchbuilt a new control stick handle. Kinda scary that the throttle was a wood handle on the stick. Pull back on the stick to climb, accidentally pull the throttle when you're thrown back by the g-force and suddenly your in an un-powered climb. Like I said, still needs some paint touch-ups and some scratchbuilt instruments. Edited March 5, 2013 by SciFi58 whiskytngofxtrt

SciFi58
Finally got some more work done. I must not have installed the ammo feed trays and fuel tank right. The upper cowling middle wing combo had a huge gap on both sides no matter how I clamped it. Aves to the rescue. Hope to finish it. SciFi58
No, Maru. When the group build ended, sad to say it went onto the shelf of best intentions and broken promises. Big shelf. I think I will get back at it when my Dragon is done. I'm going to fight tooth and nail to get the dragon ready for Wonderfest at the end of May. Then the Red Baron's ride will be next.
