alaninaustria
gun muzzle outlets on the leading edges... I noticed that there was some white paper looking patch covering the gun muzzles. Was this a paper patch applied after a fresh rearmament to prevent sand and other FOD's from gettingin there before launch? Was this only on the land based Corsairs or did the relatively few carrier machines see this also? Any advice would be great..... Cheers and thank you Alan
ChrisS
You're correct. It was a common practice for most land-based fighters op'ing from unimproved strips like grass, coral, sand etc. I have never seen them used on carriers of the time. LSP_Mike
Alan, Iknew a guy when I was a teenager who told me they would put "100 mile an hour "tape over the gun ports in the wings. (WWII) Ialso have seen this done on carrier based corsairs-on the cowlings forward of the windscreen. There is an oil/fuel tank there and the tape prevents in-flight seepage onto the windscreen. hope this helps mike in calif
P-40
They used white tape over the gun holes to keep the coral dust out, nasty suff...it was the same tape they put in front of the canopy over the fuel tank cover. I believe only land based covered the gun holes.
