Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Got started on the Guillows 1/16 th Zero.

I will convert it into the Rufe floatplane.

First step . Main float scratchbuilded and covered with Revell Plasto. Balsablocks added to make the nose and end shape.

Don't underestimate this .It's a eight hours job so far.

Lucky I was on duty yesterday so I could do this at work .But don't tell the CO ;)

Now comes the sanding...and the dust again !

tsk tsk...aren't you are on guard duty? ;)

Look out Derek...he's on the sawdust again....now where's my straw?

Easy to believe thats 8 hours work Erwin...if it was me I'd have to spend 8 hours getting all the glue off me and my clothes.

Cheers Matt

Some sanding later...

Note that the balsablocks from the first pic have been shaped into a smooth nose and aft section.

There's realy nothing you 'can't do ' with balsa.

BTW,I olso recieved the P-40 E kit today. Might get started on that one too when things have to dry here ;)

Matt,

I simply put up a sign with my picture and 'beware of this guard'.

No one dares to come near my gate :D

Hello Erwin,

Hey, the Rufe looks great. Nice job on the balsa panels between the stringers. Looks labor-intensive, but you seem to have a good system.

The Guillow 1/28 B-17 is pretty big: wingtip to wingtip is just short of 4 feet; fuselage just short of 3 feet. I guess the B-24 is about the same? The only other balsa model experience I've had was a Hellcat, back when I was 11 or 13 years old (which was ...um... not recently...).

I decided to use .010 sheet styrene to cover the B-17, thinking I would have an easier time scribing panel lines in that (this will be my first effort in scribing and major scratch-building. I wonder if I've bitten off more than I can chew...).. I tried the Monokote covering, but found it to be as lame as my effort to apply it. I plan on hanging the model from the ceiling, so I'm not doing any super-detailing. If it looks more or less like a B-17 from 3 or 4 feet away, I'll be happy.

I've only recently started checking into the LSP forums. Lots of stuff going on here! Like I told Chris S., now that I've made public mention of my first model-building effort in many years, I feel a certain committment to finishing it. Reading LSP has given me some good ideas about how to approach this.

I'll try to get some "in the works" photos posted, after I figure out how to do all the file management stuff (new ground for me also).

Keep up the good work!

Matty

Erwin,

Do you have any techniques for making the Guillow clear parts more clear? Any particular materials or buffing strategies, like for regular plastic model canopies?

I'm not quite there yet, but the B-17 has a lot of clear windows (especially the nose, of course).

The only thing I can think of is FUTURE.

Started on the wingfloats.

Not much to show, but it took me two hours to make one float.

A bit difficult to see the correct shape it has in this pic.

I'm sure it will look better once fixed under the wing.
