Tamiya Lacquer Paint

Colour range of the Tamiya lacquers is very good and comparable to their X and XF acrylic range. While there is not a one to one (acrylic to lacquer) match over the whole range, the lacquers are quickly catching up as Tamiya seem to be adding new colours to the range on a regular basis. The lacquer range also has a good range of spray can colours as well.

Mr Color lacquers seem to be quite popular with the Gunpla/Gundam crowd and have been adding some interesting colors to their range and it looks like Tamiya is responding in a similar way with their lacquer range although these new colours are not your typical military colours but does show that they are attentive and responsive to trends within the hobby

Between Tamiya LP, Creos/Gunze Mr. Color and AK Real Colors, you actually have a quite comprehensive range to choose from. Furthermore you can mix all these brands.
For thinning I use Tamiya lacquer thinner and Gunze self-levelling thinner but haven’t noticed a difference with the cheaper household lacquer thinner. In some case, adding some acetone to the thinner improves the flow.

Of course YMMV. You’ll need to test first.

Cheers,

Quang
