  1. Derek Donl;t want to speak out of turn, but Phil (Piprm) is being modest - He mastered the Wings Vacuform Boomerang in 1/32 and was going to offer the Wirraway as a follow up kit in 1/32 but life got in the way I have the Wings Boomerang - it's a beauty - Phil is a terrific bloke and an accomplished super-detailer and modeller - He could probably save you a lot of research time time and headaches ... He's up here in sunny Brisbane kind regards David
  2. Thanks Kevin Appreciate the link, but do you know whether this stuff is available in Australia ? regards David
  3. Plastic to PE Resin to Plastic PE to Resin I'm really struggling with working time when I'm trying to fix especially small after-market resin and PE parts to Plastic and PE to resin Cyno/ superglue just doesn't give me any margin for error at all - I need more working time I can and do solder where appropriate. Ignoring Cyno, the main choices are Gator, 2 part epoxy, Gorilla and varnish I almost never mix different glues on the one sub assembly ( ie superglue to for example fix the top edge of a small part in place and some other glue to hold down the rest of the job) So guys if you need to buy some working time to worry a small part into just the right place, what do you use ? - brand names would help ! Please assume I have washed and cleaned parts properly (I do) and that I have some appropriate means of holding the parts in place once glue has been applied so the glue can set up TIA David
  4. Hi Guys I've been inspired by Chris Sherland's correction article and build ... I have read up on the criticisms of the shape of the Revell cowling but no one has actually done a write up showing where the shape is off; and whether the kit part can be corrected; and if it can be fixed, whether it's sanding job or much more severe surgery is required ! References to the Rutman replacement set are no longer helpful because most of Jerry's excellent stuff is now OOP and all of it fetches crazy prices when it does become available ... So, ... does anyone have a 1/32 scale sectioned drawing of the cowl they can share ? If you do, I'd be mighty grateful "Needs must when the devil drives " ... so I'll master a resin or produce a vac replacement, but I need a starting point and just don't have the references to establish the right shapes to begin. Thanks to anyone who can help ! My direct email is lawqbarr AT optusnet.com.au (You know what to do ... replace the AT and eliminate the spaces ) Regards
  5. Hi Eric Having been privileged to visit Eric's workshop, seeing his work in progress and completed models first-hand, I'm really looking forward to seeing if there is anything you can do to add to and/ or improve on the components with which we are presented in this excellent and truly scale model. I intend that as a compliment to your skill and that of all the people who produced this kit Several years ago I obtained copies of the major factory drawings for the Balilla and the Macchi M5 intending to scratch build both machines in 1/32 and I join with Eric in saying that everyone involved in realizing the Aviattic Ansaldo kit has done a remarkable job of faithfully capturing every detail, even though a lot of that superbly executed detail will be "lost" when the model is completed. Anyway - on with the build ... Technical question - Eric, are you soldering or using CA to complete the more complex 3-D PE parts in this kit ? I know I have asked before, but what sort of iron and flux do you use when soldering ? Hope the transition to and certification on the 717 is going well Regards David
  6. Gentlemen The owner of the IP (intellectual property) molds and masters for the FM vac of the Boomerang is considering doing a limited-run re-release of this currently OOP kit . The purpose of this email is to ask modellers to give careful consideration consider putting forward GENUINE expressions of interest in a re-release of this sought after kit. An initial re-run of about 250 kits is being considered. An increase ( or reduction) in the initial production numbers will depend on the interest expressed. If there is a positive response from the modeling community, the next step will be an invitation to follow through with a pre-Order. Pre-Orders will, of course, take priority and to keep this as a genuine modeller to modeller project Orders will be limited to 2 kits per buyer. Production costs have not been finalized, but sales will be direct to the buyer with no middle man, It is hoped the that the revised FM kit will be very competitively priced against the Montex resin kit - The Montex kit ( if you can get it ) was selling for at least 125:00 GBP or about $Au215:00 ( About $US 170.00) We are looking at approximately half that figure for the FM re-issue In addition to the original plastic, (done and to be redone by Falcon in NZ ... to their usual high standard), rubber tyres and metal landing gear legs and tail wheel fork supplied in the original kit, the proposed re-issue would incorporate several up-grade improvements including (but not limited to) ... corrected wheel wells full improved engine (this will include the back end which is visible through the open inboard section of the wheel wells... like the FW D-9) additional internal detail/ engineering to allow the engine cooling gills to be displayed open improved propeller, hub and spinner upgraded cockpit - in-scale tubular framing, consoles, seat, stick, rudder pedals, instrument panel and dial details, accurate gun-sight etc ... optional hedgehog and tubular exhaust stacks A more detailed canopy frame is being considered together with a wider choice of decal options, including stenciling. PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY This is a proposal, not an Offer Pictures of the proposed improved parts are NOT currently available - However, e-Reviews and build logs of the original FM kit are available on-line - please check out Google if you wish to have another look at the first issue of the kit. I simply do not have time to reply to ( potentially) hundreds of questions but if a sufficient expression of interest is logged there will be an up-date post with (we hope) pictures to whet your appetites and a firmer indication of price In the meantime you may wish to compare the FM kit with Montex's offering using web based resources - Google is your friend for that. For those of you who have a deeper modelling wallet, there is, (or at least was) some talk a while back that Alley Cat might re-issuing their previous up-grade of Montex kit ( Alley Cat bought Montex's product line) but I have not found information about a firm proposal or price on-line. Alley Cat have a summary of their original re-release of the Boomerang priced at $125 GBP but that kit is not included as part of the their existing available stock. Genuine expressions of interest may be directed by PM to Piprm on this site at http://forum.largesc...?showuser=13971 You might like to check out my re-work if the 1/32 ID Canberra while you are at it at http://forum.largesc...305&hl=canberra Thanks for dropping by

  8. Gentlemen Thanks for the information and links esp Kevin and Maben Esq Kevin, I went right through your project on this oldie - you did a great job taming it. Wings, wing root and wheel bay You might be interested in this - I had a good look at the fight you had in this area and did it a bit differently I decided to cut out only the inner sections of the wheel bays at about the point where the gun barrel bisects the wheel well. I did that with a thin saw laid flat against the inner surface of the wings. It was a bit of fiddle, but got it done in about 45 minutes of patient sawing and a bit of work with a No 11 hobby knife blade where I couldn't use the saw scraping out a thin channel at the leading edge to release the molded section of the wheel bay to be discarded - That's left the full span lower wing completely intact, so I shouldn't have the problems you experienced with weak points at the leading edge junction of the kit wings with the resin insert. That replacement resin insert of the central section of the lower wing surface you used looked like it caused more trouble than it was worth. I'm now working with the kit parts - lower wing panel and molded wing root on the fuselage halves are intact. Looks like fuselage is about 1.5 mm too narrow at the junction of the wing panel and fuselage. I suspect that slight mis-match/ poor fit accounts for some of the trouble you had getting the wing root joint sorted out in your build. Next step - rebuilding the wheel bays and duplicating the the visible parts of the the rear of the engine ... anyone have a junked new tool D-9 kit I could salvage for a few parts ... esp the back of the engine ?? Mike Maben - I checked out the Eagle Editions parts you recommended - many thanks - that Cockpit will do very nicely and save a great slab of time !!! I think with those areas sorted out, this build should not be that difficult ... With one exception - achieving a curvature in the cooling flap/ gills - I think Sir Rodney Williams has done a couple of excellent write-ups on that subject in a couple of his Revell Corsair articles, so I will have to do a re-fresher course/ re-read ! Thanks for your help again guys David
  9. Hi Guys Please no humorists with ... the Sadist's response ... " No ! " This is one for the scratch builders Picked up an original issue Hasegawa Fw 190 D-9 - Kit #08120 Special Version - and cannot find a decent Tweak list or detailed build/. correction article. Leaving aside raised detail and re-scribing I was wondering if anyone can help with references/ ideas for wheel well correction and scratching the visible bits of the back of the engine - The molded wheel wells are very obviously all wrong on this earlier kit ... I suppose just buying a the new mold kit ( where that error was corrected) and doing a bit of resin copying might be the quick way out of the hole, but I'd prefer to "have a go" at some real modelling to thrash this oldie into shape ! Any comments or internet sources on cockpit corrections and detailing also much appreciated !! TIA David
  10. Dear Doc I have replied to you direct - Perhaps the messages have not come through ?? my direct email is lawqbarr@otusnet.com.au Hope to hear back soon David
  11. I wanted contact Dr Mitchell,to discuss his Blackburn Blackburn project, but there is no contact for him in the members area- My interest is not scratch building methodology but in the limited resources he was able to dig up in the hope he might share - I have found virtually nothing and hoped the Dr might take pity and help fill a few holes ! David
  12. Ironwing I actually hadn't thought of that ... You now have me thinking about a solution for something that has bothered me for a very long time Thanks for the inspiration David
  13. Your weathering and distressing work its just outstanding You don't miss a thing do you ? - the subtle riveting topped by your heavily oxidized ali finish is the best I have ever seen - Utterly convincing How on earth did you get that subtle, really fine granular effect into the "oxidized" aluminium/ aluminum on the cowling ?? Would genuinely appreciate a lesson if you have the he time to tell us how you captured that "look" Looking forward to more David
  14. Karim You have made that into a wonderfully war-weary and tired looking aeroplane ! David
  15. That's beautiful work Is the cane seat a kit part ? If it is, it's big step up from some of Special Hobby's earlier cockpit detailing Look forward to seeing the final product !
  16. Hi Guys Does anyone have a reasonably quick and reliable solution to achieving a convincing rag wing with limited waste I mention waste because the "Woodman method" and it's various iterations and close relations can see a significant amount of precision work lost and wasted if the material, used to cover the core is misaligned - Very frustrating - then there is the business of getting a sharp trailing edge without solvent glue warping the the very thin plastic or epoxy or super-glue turning the trailing edge into a mess of goopy squeeze out which then gets stuck to the work board !! Ken Henderson advocates solid (bass) wood shape which is then finished in epoxy over which you lay strips of thin tape to emulate rib tapes which ion turn then get enclosed in a final coat of epoxy - That works for really well for a lot of projects and it certainly gives a very positive "key" for strut attachment points, but that method still sometimes falls a bit short of getting the prominent leading edge rib and false rib protrusions you might want to see on, say, something like a Gloster Gamecock. Getting the deeper scoops at the leading edge lined up with the rib lines towrd the mid and trailing sections of the wing is well nigh impossible I guess short of actually doing a fully ribbed structure, ( George Lee's Keystone bomber and his Corsair which we see in " Scratchbuilt !" shows the terrific effect which can be achieved using this approach, but is is terribly labour-intensive ), the bottom line is that one method won't fit all Does any one have a favorite method for making rag wings they care to share ?
  17. That streaked / dragged brush finish is very convincing - Well done Nice tutorial on how you got there too Thanks
