DMurph Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Thor, I don't know how I missed this one! The cockpit looks absolutly stunning, I love the weathering not to much just enough. Cheers Murph...
bdthoresen Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 Bsarnoffca, Dragonfly, and Murph- Thanks for the compliments guys. I truly do appreciate them. We shall see how the build progresses. I am happy with the results overall. There will be some things I will do different next time (Veltro!) I am working on the tail right now- we shall see how it comes out.... THOR
bdthoresen Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Well, here is some of the preliminary detailing I am doing on the wheel well at the moment- Thanks to Manu's pics, I have a pretty good idea of what it should look like- CHAOS! So I started from the bottom of the well, and am working my way up....... Here is a bottom view of what I have added so far- most of it is shielded copper wire, and I used some Tamiya tape to replicate some heat sheilding on a couple of hoses ala' Brian Cauchi's 109 article....not completely accurate, but, I think it looks cool.
bdthoresen Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Here is the view from the right wing- As you can see, quite a bit of detailing can be done when the kit parts are assembled. I still have to add a pair of p.e. parts down the center of the well, but aside from that, that is all you get in the kit. Now one can see why I was stressing a bit!!!!!
bdthoresen Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Here is a shot of the nose gun cover in place- it has been filled with CA and Baby Powder mix- and sanded to shape- faired in nicely I think. The whole airframe is gonna need a scribing touch up- I will tackle that before painting. Some of the small cowling scoops will have to be opened up, but all in all, it is progressing.
bdthoresen Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 That's it for now- The one thing I did discover is the kit instructions are, well, vague in some places. The three flat plates that make up the main gear bay have to be fitted perfectly in order to have proper wing to fuselage fit. The rear plate need to be perfectly perpendicular to the longitudnal axis of the aircraft. This in turn will allow the top and front plates to fit properly. Also, the kit gives you a "z" shaped engine support to be fitted between these plates- You will need to trim it to fit( it is the diagonal piece of styrene) - It is too large as the kit gives it to you. Also- Make sure you remove the casting block from the cockpit floor completely- I did not, so now I am grinding it away with the Dremel, as well as the inside top of the lower radiator on the wing center section (toward the rear of wing part). The wing will not close to the fuselage- Be warned!!!!!! Thanks for looking- THOR
bdthoresen Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Thanks Ted- I appreciate the comments- still a long way to go- I love the work on your Mi-8. I will post more tomorrow- Thanks Again!!!! THOR
Fancherello Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Hello Thor excellent work so far ! very clean and neat detailling, lovely ! Fanch
bdthoresen Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Thanks Fanch- I loved your SBD- I am not a good builder- I am a painter. If I can get the kind of quality of paintwork you did on the Dauntless, I will be doing well. Still adding wiring to the well- Almost ready for paint- Hopefully will be able to post a few more pics this afternoon. Thanks for the comments! THOR
bdthoresen Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 Well, here is the current progress..... After 5 different size wires, drilling holes, and countless colors- (seven to be exact) I painted and installed all of the wiring I could muster. I base painted the wheel well with Raw Umber, followed by RAF interior Green. I then added some highlights with a 50/50 mix of RAF I.G. and Flat White. Some of the molded details were brush painted, and the individual hoses and wires were airbrushed their respective colors. The wires were routed and superglued in place. The painting looks too clean, but I will be getting to the weathering as soon as it dries. It will have to be washed, and dry-brushed, with a bit of pastels added for wear- Lastly I will add a flat-coat, with a bit of paint chippping thrown in for good measure......Hope you all like it...Thanks to Manu again for the awesome pics!!!!! THOR
bdthoresen Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 Some of the various filters and bits were made from scrap resin, plastic, and solder......
bdthoresen Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 Another shot, pre-weathering....... Thanks for looking...... THOR
