DaveJ Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Hi Gang, I've only recently re-discovered this wonderful hobby after not building anything since I was a child. For my fourth build I've sorta gone off the deep end and purchased the Tamiya A6M5 and the following detail sets: Eduard #32066 Engine detail Eduard #33001 Color PE dashboard CMK #5001 Exterior While I wait for some paints to arrive from an on-line order I've begun the engine with the Eduard details. I've already discovered one thing: I NEED GLASSES. Has anyone done this build with the CMK Exterior kit? It seems to involve a good deal of cutting which scares the willies out of me as a rookie so any tips would be great. This is going to be a slow build as I try a lot of new things with some of the great ideas I've seen on here. I'll post some more as I make more progress. D
ChrisS Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Welcome to LSP RookieLSP! I moved this to the member builds section in the works forum. Your Zero looks great so far! Please try to post images that are 800 pixles wide or less for easier viewing. Cheers~
DaveJ Posted June 17, 2007 Author Posted June 17, 2007 A short update on progress so far. The internet oredered paints have finally arrived so I'm digging back in on this build. My first attempt at aftermarket PE sets (Eduard engine kit) is proving to be quite the challenge! The more I sit and go cross-eyed with these wires, the more I realize that I have MILES to go in developing my skills. Some of the results I've been drooling over in this forum just floor me. But then again I'm doing this at the dining room table in an apartment... I should have the engine buttoned-up tomorrow and will get some pics up then. I'd love some tips from some of you!
DaveJ Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 I've started to work on some of the other assemblies and the interior of the fuselage. Can't wait to start on the pit since the level of detail seems great even out of the box. Here are the halves of the fuselage after some paint and a wash.
DaveJ Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 Here's the oil tank and firewall after some drybrushing and Eduard PE bits added.
DaveJ Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 Here are some shots of the completed engine. For never having worked on anything with this level of detail I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The Eduard PE set makes a big difference!
DaveJ Posted June 23, 2007 Author Posted June 23, 2007 I've nearly finished the pit floor at least until the rest of the controls are added. Going for a fairly dirty bird with this build so I can attempt some of the weathering tips I've been drooling over looking at the results you folks get on here. I have a lot to learn....
DaveJ Posted June 24, 2007 Author Posted June 24, 2007 Today I got through most of the cockpit side walls. I found that the Eduard PE parts for the throttle/pitch/AC control levers was too "flat" and two-dimensional so I used the part that came with the kit and canabalized the control linkages from the PE set to add some detail. I've also started to add some wiring to the control boxes though I'm not sure if the original had these visible or not. It was more so I could see if I could do it. I plan to add a wiring harness to the back of the main instument panel as well just for grins. Is there anybody out there...?
DaveJ Posted June 24, 2007 Author Posted June 24, 2007 Here's a slightly better view. I still have to weather and dry-brush the side walls but they're pretty much ready to go at this point. I also closed the fuselage today. The halves fit very well and will require little sanding to make the seam vanish. Some gap filling CA and sanding should be all she needs.
DMurph Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 Welcome to LSP, Your Zeke is looking great! I think the tips you find here are some of the best on the web, and I like the added detail you are adding it really makes a difference. Cheers Murph...

Coming from you any compliment is high praise... Your Corsairs in particular make me feel like I need a drool-cup!
DaveJ Posted June 24, 2007 Author Posted June 24, 2007 Help! I really need some input before I start what could be a potentially disasterous phase of this build. I got a resin set from Czech Masters which includes some cool "open panel" details for the zero. I have never carved into a model and the prospect of ruining a pretty expensive kit has me pretty nervous. Two questions for the Masters: 1) What is the best way to cut out a panel? I don't know if I should use a heated knife, start from the middle or what. I only have one shot on this one... no "un-do" command. 2) How do I get the excess resin off these parts? There isn't a bench grinder on my dining room table... Any tips will be much apprecieated! David
