  1. Outstanding work Mal, really enjoying this build a lot.  Thanks for taking the time to show us how you are dealing with such a difficult kit- makes me really want to tackle my Midway bird.

    Thx Daywalker :D

I Like to share like other builders also do ;) how to overcome som issues or troubles with a model and how i/they solved something ;) also how they made it and to se whats ahead :D.....

Thats what ive done with this build, ive took peek on several buffalo HS Buffaolo 1:32 builds how they solved issues with this model and it helped me a lot to come up with own solutions....and to see whats lays ahead of me...

Also... Just love the "tetris" think, dont se problems, se solution ;) enginering thinking :D

And i hope they who is taking this model that they are helped by my build, and develop new ideas how to solve the issues on this one ;)

    ps.

i would love to see your midway bird :D its so cool..

  2. WOW..

Yhats a real beauty you got there, just love the weathering, deatils, your chipping, thumbs up on this one, everything is perfection :D, i like it a lot, just LOVIT :D

Painting the insignias is so nice, it makes the whole a lot :D

Small and minor question, is the aeilirons movable on this model, since both are down, they work like the pic below........its not a big thing...

    6gkt.jpg

Ive made the same  mistake, on my F4F and one pointed it to me, (off course i knew it and missed it) and my was movable and they dropped down (glued them in position now) one down and one up. (a little bit)

  3. Thx Sparzanza ,Kev and Thomas.

    To Sparzanza:

Tackar :D , salt chipping, som jag använt mig av, tredje kärran jag jobbar med, finns en tutorilal på tekniken jag använder som jag utveklat som passar mig på IPMS Göteborg..... om du är nyfiken.

In english: Thx :D, ive used a salt scipping technuiqe, its the third aircraft i work with, i got a tutorial at IPMS Göteborg that i use and developed thats fits me,  if you ar curios to se how i did it.

    To Thomas:

Thx Thomas :D im glad you like it, you should absolutely take on this build, ive seen your previous work and you will manage this model flawless i think, take a look on other builders and solve the issues withthis one, its a fun build, and i higly recomend SH Brewster 1:32, this is my first short run build, and so far ive enjoyd it ALOT, even if its been hard sometimes, but just sit down and think how to solve some problems, and thats one of the things that made me driven on this build, test new skill, develop new ones, enginering solutions and so on, this is a candidate for my 11th finished build since my restart last year, haven been building in 19 yrs.

also see all these fantastic builds going on in this forum and finished builds is awesome and inspiring for me alot.

    /Mal

  4. Allright,

Work to be done about this models landing gear, the models construction is wery fragile, and the maingear takes in an angle about full weight of the model, so they will easily snap, ive allready reinforcened the main gear with two layers of plastick card striper about 1mm on the inside (not visible at all)

I been looking at reference material how its supposed to be, and also looked at scale RC modelers Buffalo models how the landing gear works, and figured out exaclu where to put things, since the models description is a sad story...

    So here we go.

The shafts that pulls the landing gear got new pins, made them out of guitar string 0,40mm

    kg83.jpg

Drilled/improved the joint on the landing gear, 45 degre angle.
    7nqb.jpg

Drilled a hole for the new pin to fit for the shafts that pulls the landing gear
    vwgq.jpg

Dry fitting it all, its perfect, the benefit of this solution is that the shaft also takes up the models weight, and its not that fragile any more ;)

    And the reward ,)
    7bgk.jpg

Just wanted to share a bit from me ;) as a person on this forum ;)

  6. thx peter

Been looking how to solve the fitting, hmmmm (tetris in my head for prefect fit)

Im gonna dry fit the landing gear with blue tack, its safe since if i see major errors i can solve them before i go "live" ;), its crucial to get this right at first attemt ;), off course i can fail, but its the patch job to do, so, ill try to be preperade as possible ;)...and think ahead, see solutions :D

  7. Thx Kev.

Ive read alot about this model, common problem is the Landing gear ant tail wheel, its very weak, since the model itself dont have proper fitiitn and joints for it, they break very very easily.

So ive been preperade for it ;), ive builded a new joint in the maingear with plastic card, the tail wheel is preperade, all of that problems other builder had with this "problem child", i think i solved major of them, i will be fiddling with the main landing gear aolot, its gonna require alot of work to get it real straight, i can accep about 1mm maybe 2 mm wingtip error worts case scenario, when its done ;), im a perfectionist about those things, symmetric ;)

  8. Hey....

Misshaps happen all the time, every model build,  its the skill to fix em ;), trust me, thats how you also learn alot about model building, belive mee, i done several of thimes :D, and alot of modellers vill agree vith me on that ;)

    And you made it :D

Next model is an new challenge to try new things and perfiction them that you already have ;)

Dont forget, Modelling is also an ART ;)

  9. Damn.....

You made that "patch" paint job flawless, never happened, thumbs up,

That hurricane is shure looking damn good,

    Gunsmoke, Oil, Chipping...

    I Like it :D

Edit, that Pilot is really nice, weathered, details.

    Good Job. ;)

    Hmmm,

Im gonna buy a Airfix Hurricane too, its a real cool airplane.

  10. A small update this night...

Vallejo Primer is on.... The rivet heads pop out damn good ;) It shure looks good, im pleased ;)

    9p9i.jpg

The tail wheel i sad....But my way it will be better, i had to make it stronger, bit of guitar string, new axis for the tail wheel :)
    0dyn.jpg

Done, i did cut the srtring just a little bit shorter, pushed it in, CA glue and baking powder, grinded it with 2000 Grit wet paper ;), just perfekt
    70ut.jpg

    Primed, preshaded, Alclad Dural Alu....
    gsdj.jpg

oh Yes the Canopy "slides" in place, Photo etched parts ;), bent in to correct shape, and i wont paint theese since they are perfect look, right mettalic and so on :D

  11. Ive been looking at this thread several times.

    Im missing pictures...

Please share some pictures, it would be really fun to see your progress on the build of your F4F (ive bild one my self) you can check my buildlog at IPMS Gothenburg how i solved some of the issues with this model, also take a look at ny result.

Im really looking forward to see your progress :D

    /Mal

  12. Thx kev.

That one was fiddly to fit perfekt, had to prepare the fit quite early in the build, so that it wouldnt be any problems, had a big gap, big level difference between the fuselage and the rear canopy, but solved it :).

This build is fun, huge "tetris" in my head haha, see solutions ;) not problems.

also: hmm the antenna pole is straight, that camera warping the pics lol.. use iphone 4s for building log, at the end when finished ill load up my Eos 60D with 50/1,4, ;)

  13. Thx peter.

    Minor update.

Made some progress on the Landinggear, the landing gear cover is in place, Now the rivet heads on the "inside" of the landing gear.

ive been loking at photos, and clearly see that there is rivets, but its sparse on good pics on them, so, added on the spots that look right.

it makes an good overall impression i think.

    xzm3.jpg

A small antenna pole, made out of guitar string 0,40mm
    yioc.jpg

And the antenna attachment on the fuselage, its much easier to glue the antenna wire ;)....ill be using fibers from female stockings :innocent: , they work awesome ;), flexible, and stretchy and wont break that easy, and they are really cheap :)
    szvm.jpg

  14. meanwhile the landing gear is resting, i continue with the position lights.

Red, green and blu lights are made out of clear spruce, heaten it up, and drawn it to proper thicknes ;), then cut, then naul polisher to mage them ball shape, then cut, then drill a small hole, and a drop of color in that hole,

it took me about 50 tries :evil_laugh: before i suceeded with all the lamps, off course when holding that tiny bit a managed to run the drill into my finger twice, draw some blood on this build too ;)

    Small update.

The breaktubes in place, figured out where to fit them.

    wlcc.jpg

  15. Nice legs on this chubby one,

Those small tiny knobs thats supposed to call it wheel axis, those aint good for me, replace them immediatly with new axis made out of brass tube, the opposite brass bearings, so much better, prepared the suspencions with selmade surfacer, so they look more right, oh yes, ill put som rivets on the top also, been looking at reference material, so there will be rivets

    m04h.jpg
    w2ih.jpg
    c7d4.jpg

Well, the landing gear is resting for now, the Tamiya putty have to cure to tomorrow ;)

  16. Thx Frank.

    Decision is made.

Ill let it be, after a day of thoughts ;) its allways good to be self critic and ask others for feedback ;).

Some minor weathering still, exhaust stains, gunshell openings and so on, exhaust leaks around engine cowling

Going to make som subtile streaks using oil color on strategic points..

Maingear painting, weathering today, ill scratch new wheel axis and bearings from brass, since the models landing gears axis look  "weak"
