  1. John,

I wasn't implying your post was criticizing Dave. On the contrary, I think you've handled any perceived animosity by anyone rather dignified.

Like I said before your build is superb. And I think no one in any way is criticizing that. I also don't think Dave was criticizing your build either. I think it's fair to assume Dave is equally impressed as we all are.

The crux of the matter comes when we start dinging Trumpeter and all too often it's a polarizing issue. These discussions always seem to devolve into name calling, political diatribes and mud-slinging.

I think it's fair to say all of us are a bit frustrated at the things we see coming from them (Trump). We all fervently hope their next release will demonstrate they've learned from their past transgressions but once again our hopes are dashed. it's a viscious cycle repeated over and over again. Alas, hope springs eternal.......

This isn't meant to take away from the fun John had building his kit or the fine job he has done.

Let's try to discuss the kit and try to keep politics and emotions out of the discussion. There will those that will be happy with whatever they get in the box. And there will be those that demand fidelity to scale (rivet-counter for lack of a better term). The vast majority will fall into the middle range that will want to know what the faults are and then decide for themselves what to fix and what they can live with.

I'd like to think there's room for all this range of discussion on the forum.

    Jeff

  2. I think Dave Roof gave a relatively cognizant critique of the kit's scale outline and didn't slam anyone......

That said, I've been looking forward to this kit for a while and will probably buy one of each variant. But......there's always a but, right?

I'm paying $125+ for this kit and I don't think it's too much to ask for at least some "due diligence" on Trumpeters part. So, they may know someone is going to come out with an aftermarket resin set, some PE frets and other assorted bits and bobs of details (this will jack the final bill for the kit to well over $250) the point is why can't they do a decent pit from the get-go?

Why does this keep happening from Trumpeter? They are pushing the envelope when it comes to kit prices but yet they are not making significant improvements. They're making the same mistakes as with previous kits. I think for the amount we're being asked to fork over for the kit we, as consumers, should at least expect certain things. I mean, look at Tamiya's new Spit. We're actually paying less and getting more. It can be done. Trumpeter has been doing this kit making almost 10 years now. They should have learned a bit.

I really don't see hope for the forthcoming F-14 and Super Hornet...and those are going to be even more costly.

Perhaps I should just shut up and build it.....

  3. First off John....nice build! :deadhorse: I love your workmanship. :deadhorse:

    Now, questions about the model:

Based on the instructions posted on line how did you handle the gun Trump has one putting into the ammo pod?

Does Trump show the belt feed from the ammo pod to the gun pod?

Did you detail the engine? From what I can see of the assembly there's not much that can be seen once the wing is on and what is there if you leave the wing off is totally fictional....

Are there strakes anywhere in the kit? Most Harriers fly with the strakes rather than the gun pods......I would hope that Trump would have included the option.

What's your impression about the cockpit? Did you build it OOB or try to 'spruce' it up?

Are there misspelled decals? (Trump is famous for this)

Did you close the lower bypass doors on the intakes yourself or does the kit represent that correctly?

How are the join lines? Is much filler needed? Are there ejector pin marks that are in bad places?

    Do the nozzles rotate?

    Are the flaps positionalble?

    Once again outstanding work!

    Jeff

  4. At some point after fuselage halves are attached, I intend to add internal fuselage guts and fairing above engine nozzle. I have created a piece that should work for this with some refinement. :)

    Kevin

    Kevin,

That plasticard looks nice over the exhaust opening but I think you may find the engine nozzle may not get past it.

I filled that 'gap' on mine with blue acryl and had to do a fair bit of sanding and blending to get the exhaust nozzle to clear. There's a bit of a 'step' on yours that could be troublesome. Make sure you test fit to be sure. The opening for the exhaust is a bit deceptive. The radius of the circle actually 'intrudes' into that overhang of the rudder/tailfin.

  5. I'll be jumping on this bandwagon soon.

My conversion set is on the way (along with the book) and I picked up a T-Bird kit last night. I still need some more resin and PE items and then I'll be good to go.

Nice work so far Eli. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

  6. No wonder why I couldn't sell my NIB Mirage a few months ago. Everyone seems to have the kit

Now that I have the pit from Harold I may start the kit in a few months (I have othe projects that need clearing out first)

Until then flying the 2000 in my sim will have to do...

  7. James,

First off I LOVE that OMG smiley.

Second, I had my eye on this kit ever since I saw it on the Squadron mailer a few months ago. But....man-o-man those pictures you posted. OY!

I can see why you're bailing out. Jeez, that thing looks like a nightmare. I'm going to rethink any ideas I may have had of getting that kit now.

    Good luck on that Komet.

    Jeff

  8. How far into the build??

Are you just starting the pit thingy?

Let me know, I may have something for you to check out for me.

    Cheers,

    Harold

I haven't started yet. In the process of finalizing things........

    PM me with your ideas.

  9. I found some decals on ebay for Peddinghaus Marinefliegers and Luftwaffe versions so I will probably go with those. German isn't my native tongue and the prices are higher when buying direct from Peddinghaus because they automatically add the 19% VAT  so at least they are on ebay. I'm wating for their answer back on combined shipping before I hit the button to buy.

You really have to get creative on searching for these things. Simple "1/32 F-104G decals" just doesn't cut it.

Thanks again Thierry for the lead on Pedderinghaus. I had not heard of them before and none of my internet searched brought them up.

Perhaps you guys will be seeing a Hase big F-104G soon on the pages here.

    Jeff

  10.

    Theirry,

I found the Tauro site previously but they want you to buy several sheets. They have separate sheets with insignia, tail numbers, badges, etc. but not one cohesive sheet for a specific aircraft. That's a bit too pricey for me. Plus their sheets apply to more than one aircraft type (i.e. Tornado or other a/c)

I had not run across the Peddinghouse links in my previous Google searches. Thanks. The second link might work for me. It would be nice to see a color three view of the aircraft with those markings before I commit to buy. 17 euros is a bit much to spend on a hunch without seeing the markings applied first.

    Jeff

  11. Hi!

A lot of european decal companies have released sets for their own air force. AFAIK, at least Daco and Peddinhaus have sets that are available (look after them on Google). I think Italian AF decals are also possibly available from Tauro.

    HTH

Most, if not all of those I have searched for and found have said they are pending. Nothing available yet.....

    Jeff

  12. I was looking through my stash and pulled out the Hase F-104G/S. I had it for sale a few months ago but NO ONE wanted it so I figured I might as well build it.

I was wondering what decals were out there for it that are NOT OOP. There seems to be a dearth of decals for this kit. Internet searches have turned up bupkis.

I'm not in the mood to do this one NMF and would prefer a two or three tone cammo color scheme. As the kit really isn't an "S" version I'm pretty much limited to "G" models and the countries that flew them. I'm

So, what decals ARE available in 32nd for the F-104?

    Jeff
