Painting the Zunum Prototype Model in 10 Days
Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Thanks for the kind comments! Mr. Knapp was exactly what I expected from a man with multiple degrees in aeronautical engineering from MIT: intelligent, calm, and measured. It was a real kick to work with him if only for ~10 days or so I'm just glad I didn't have another issue with the model before I finished. I was running out of both patience and energy -
Well I've been too busy with the business, life, and painting display models of prototype, electric-hybrid, regional airliners!! Crazy Stuff: Acrylics over Dupli-Color Lacquer primer over a 3-D printed model of a soon-to-be 1/1 scale prototype. Although a lot of fun, I don't think I'll be doing this again any time too soon https://modelpaintsol.com/builds/painting-zunum-prototype-display-model Comments Welcome!

Just Tested New MIssion Models Acrylics--Great Paint
Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Hey Peter, Where I would say Mission Models paints have something the others don't is how easy it is to do fine-line work with them. There's very little tip dry so when properly diluted and shot through a 0.15mm tip I can get 1mm lines and less all day with very little effort. I just shot my first video last week in the hope of putting some "how-to" fine-line demonstration videos on my site in the next few weeks. We're starting with fine-line Mission Models and fine-line Vallejo techniques first. I'll give you a heads-up when they're posted. Thanks for the response and best regards, --John -
What Kind(s) of Paint Are On Your Work Bench?
Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Hey D.B., Let me correct that. The line IS up and here's the link: http://mcwfinishes.com/ The "Military Finishes" line is what I'm testing now. Awesome paint. Apologies for the earlier post. For some reason, I could not find it on my confuser, I mean computer. best, --John -

Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Hey D.B., The line isn't up yet on the manufacturers website, Wings, Wheels, and Waves. Here a link: http://www.wingswheelswaves.com/ Till they're listed on WWW, here's a link to a brief introduction on Cybermodeler: https://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/paint/mcw/paint_mcw_paints.shtml I'm half way through the MPS spray test and they shoot beautifully. I'll be posting a review on the MPS site soon. best, --John -
What Kind(s) of Paint Are On Your Work Bench?
Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Hey D.B., I've got a couple of lines on my bench to test but one I'm really impressed with is the Military Finishes line by Model Car World. Awesome paint. Some of the most accurate paints color-wise I've seen. The manufacturer/owner takes pride in their accuracy for good reason. The solvent is Ppg Duracryl. They come pre-thinned, and shoot like a dream. I'll be publishing an article on them soon. Have you perchance used this paint or any of the automotive colors in their range? best, --John -
Hey Everybody, We've added our first paint line: Mission Models Acrylics! I was really impressed with how forgiving this paint is, especially for fine-line work. We're stocking the entire line which will be available on our site in a day or so. We're also testing lacquer and enamel lines so I'm shooting a lot of paint these days If you have a moment, check out my 1/48 Fw-190 V18 Kanguruh with paint chipping trick on our site. Easy kit, fun paint scheme. Thanks and best, --John

What Kind(s) of Paint Are On Your Work Bench?
Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Hey Brian, I couldn't agree more. Gunze lacquers are simply some of the best. I just finished the Trumpeter 1/48 Fw190 V18 "Kanguruh"and used Gunze Silver#8 as a base coat for LIfeColor RLM02 which scratched off beautifully to produce a recently riveted appearance: great paint. I have access to one shop that sells Gunze: it can be hard to find. I'm considering a new line of lacquers to carry on Model Paint Solutions, in part, because of the difficulties in availability of Gunze in some places. Have you found that to be the case? Thanks -John -

What Kind(s) of Paint Are On Your Work Bench?
Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Hey Joel, Good to know. Being pretty much a aircraft-only modeler, I'm not exposed to that many car guys. With regards to lacquers and car models, I just received some RLM lacquers made by Model Car World. They look beautiful color-wise: seem to be spot on and diluted for spraying right out of the bottle. I'll be putting them through the spray test soon and will publish the results on MPS. Have you (or anyone else) shot these lacquers? Thanks, --John -

Thanks to everybody that replied: much appreciated. I'm relieved to read how many of you use enamels and lacquers! I was under the impression that acrylics were beginning to dominate the field. Glad I was wrong. Thanks again for all the great replies. best, --John M -
What Kind(s) of Paint Are On Your Work Bench?
Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Hey Peter, I've been teaching airbrushing classes out of my favorite hobby store for the last few years and I've helped a lot of guys with their technique. Is there a particular brand that you want to use that's giving you difficulties? best, -J -
What Kind(s) of Paint Are On Your Work Bench?
Stuka replied to Stuka's topic in Model Paint Solutions
Thanks for your answer. This best describes my situation where I will use multiple types and brands on an individual build based on the application at hand. I'm beginning to think this is more common that I originally thought. -
Hello All, One of the goals for MPS is to carry a small selection of paints. I would prefer to carry brands that are not main stream such as Vallejo, LifeColor or Tamiya. All are great paints but there are lesser-known brands that offer better finishes and/or spray-ability. Being old school, I'm a lacquer-man. That said, I spray a lot of different acrylics and usually use multiple types of paint on a single build. What types and brands of paint do you use? Do you spray Lacquers, Enamels, and/or Acrylics? Thanks and happy modeling! --John
