  1. Is there anyone out there who is capable of molding some resin 1/32 burner cans for this beast? I have the ones I have built ( which might serve as masters ). The problem is that I still get a number of requests for the write-up to build the thing, and am happy to help, but the hang-up is the cans.

Having done several sets, I really am not all that anxious to go into that business. I do send out some sets of the basic moldings occasionally, but I really don't want to do that on a large-scale (to coin a phrase) basis, and besides, I know nothing about it.

But, since there is still no sign of a kit on the market, I am willing to at least look into the possibility of getting some made.

    Anybody know any body?

  2. Sigh.

Thanks for sharing the pics Kev.

Is that a 1/24 scale two seat Harrier? Gee, I wished I'd have got to see that. Anybody know who makes that conversion?

Big jets and two wingers take all the prizes eh? No love for the Germans this year...

Looks to have been a good turn out. Hobby not as unhealthily as the dark clouds would have us believe.

What's next on the Melbourne event calendar?

There is not a 24th Conversion, but several have been built. One dates from several eons ago and can be found at http://www.internetmodeler.com/2000/september/aviation/harrier.htm

If ou want to tackle one, let me know and I will help out if I can. BTW, I am in the middle of doing a 32nd Harrier T.12, so it is deja vu all over again---

  3. Derek:

I agree with this conclusion; I spent a lot of time pouring over everything I had and went to school on tthe data Dave gathered (altthough I haven't to him in several years). Everything I had also jibes with that.

It also fits with everything I found out about the flap//nozzle area. From the very first one of these I did, the over-wide rear fuselage just did not look right, but I couldn't figure out how to fix it until I started working on the "definitive" conversion---

    Thanks Chek,

Useful information (I would like to see your fuselage mapping?). I am beginning to have a feeling that the intakes were enlarged by displacing them 6" outwards from the splitter plates to obtain the required 20% increase in mass airflow. How far back this extension went is my next concern? Looking at the plan view of the standard F-4J, the intakes describe a steady curve from the front, going aft to a point about mid fuselge, were the sides are nearly parallel. This is much furter aft than most AM resin kit seamless intakes go, so it my assumption that the British Phantom intake are also enlarged to this point, then follow the standatd fuselage shape in a near parallel line to the jet pipes. This also makes sense from an aircraft engineering point of view. The strongest part of the aircraft is most likely between the wing front and rear spars and corresponding fudelage cross spars. You would normally not wish to alter this area if you could help it, so and fuselage increase in area would be best before this point - which it does. Likewise, the same applies aft of the rear spar, which is where the lower fuselage angles down towards the Spey jet pipes. My conclusion therefore is that the centre fuselage of the F-4K/M will - to all extents and purposes, be idetical to that of the F-4J aircraft, with the fuselage alterations only occurring fore and aft of the wing spars.

    Cheers

  4. One more addendum: If I remember correctly (and at my age---), the Wild Hare was priced at $185, which doesn't seem so high now, but was very dear at the time.

Frank (with 5 Phantoms on the shelf and a few boxes waiting downstairs----) The really wierd part is that this is the first and only aircraft I have ever made multiples of, much less 5. Actually, it is 8 if you count a couple of early Revells (one actually won a contest in New England and the second was presented to the guest speaker at the 1975 IPMS Nationals), and the original FGR conversion (which Dave dismantled, with my assent, to help with the Wild Hare kit).

  5. I am lurking out here and have sent a bunch of the FGR articles and would be glad to send more. Just contact me through LSP. my goal is to have a table full of FGRs in Orlando---

links to Frank's build articles in this thread all point to the old articles, most of which have been copied over to the new system, but have not yet been removed from the old. I have no plans to remove them in the immediate future, but when they are, all bookmarks to any of them will fail. There's still a lot of work to be done before that happens, including replacing the the old (current) Articles section with the new one. We're doing a lot of clean-up as we go, and trying to ensure that all multi-part articles have all their parts linked to each other properly.

  6. Tigger:

For what it might be worth, I did an earlier version 24th scale Harrier 2-seater using the Aeromodeller plans and the Airfix kit. It did make on to the internet about 10 years ago (God, am I really that old? The answer is yes, unfortunately). Anyway, here is the url: http://www.internetmodeler.com/2000/september/aviation/harrier.htm ). The model still exists and I have some more modern pictures, but I always mess up trying to post pictures, so if anyone would like to see them, let me know---

    HI Guys

You may remember a couple of years ago I decided to build a Lightning T5 conversion from the Trumpeter kit just 10 days before the IPMS UK Nationals?

Well this year I have decided to do a similar thing with the Harrier kit to make the Harrier T-10. What I need is to find some good plans and reference material to aid me along. I remember there was some talk here a while ago about it and thought I would ask. I intend to use the Aries cockpit with some modifications and make a copy then the Scale Aircraft conversions metal gear and aries wheel bays.

I will have to scratch build the new nose and canopies. As I have the first Harrier kit to hand I will also have to make the mid weapons pylon, and LERX extend the sting of the tail , not entirely sure if the fin is bigger yet. So far I have the Marl Atrill book and some other bits in the World airpower series.

Any pointers or assistance would go a long please

    Thank you in advance

    John

  7. So have you finally joined the 32nd Set?

Many of you know Dimitri's excellent creations from when he was doing the masters for many of Collect-Aire's kits and later the patterns for Meteor Productions.

Since then he started his own company in Russia and just this past July Dimitri came to the US with his family to realize his dream and do business out of the US.

He is now going to be the sole source for his product line. He has set up shop and is cranking away production and sales!

The good news for me is that he settled down in Tucson where I live too and I have the chance to see him and his works and of course go with him to the Pima Air and Space museum for live references!

To this specific forum the following link is of relevance:

    DMold-modelworks

These are his best selling full length intakes for the Tamiya Phantom and the Academy F-18.

My hopes are that Dimitri really makes it in the US so we get to see all the other projects he has up his sleeve come to life!

    thanks all,

    Fotios Rouch

  8. That looks terrific---

Another update, sorry for the delay but hopefully the hard stuffs over with and now progress should be quicker

I have now finished the major airframe modifications, installed the cockpit and primed the kit. Still needs a touch up here and there but 99% "airframed" to an FR1.

Next will be the wings and tail section, nose and trying to get the rest of the parts into the cockpit!

Look forward to any comments and recommendations.

  9. I will jump into this discussion just to give my support to Derek for the FGR burner cans. A nice set of these could make a huge difference in the time and effort to complete a model of this bird.

I have gotten a number of requests for the conversion zip files, (and know of at least a couple that are underway), and all of those plus who knows how many more could use those cans. They are definetly the thing that slows me down when I think of doing "just one more".

Maybe I could add to my collection. After all, I only have five built Phantoms already, I certainly neeed need more---

    Frank

  10. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the nice comments. It really does make it all worthwhile when a bunch of guys with the talents displayed on LSP think your work is decent. I do have fun with this hobby (obsession?), and the comments from others that feel the same way make all the difference.
