Hobby Craft Sopwith Camel (the old one...)

Recommended Posts

Was given this kit and thought what the heck (I have to STOP saying that...). Another one of these old builds and the decals are like I've never seen.  This will be fun...

Here is the box and the aircraft I'm going for:

Already got started and apologies for not getting a shot of the (very) simple IP.  No instrument decals so painted with a tooth pick again.  Not too bad, but even I can see a major problems with the cockpit - its just not accurate and the IP is also wrong.  I'll post pictures later.  Oh well, this is an OOB build.

Got the body in primer (still working on a nasty top seam) and already sprayed the front in dull aluminum, as well as the cowl.

Here is my cowl holder:

And started working on the wooden ribs.

I'd be half tempted to paint most of the markings but the raised detail on the wing ribs is a little daunting.  I've actually spend a lot of time trying to sand down the prominent ribs.  We'll see how she turns out and I'll post pictures later.

Thanks guys!  Fixed the seam this evening and even shot the wood on the fuselage (with a bit of overspray to fix on the aluminum part).  Might have to wait for paints to arrive as the LHS closed down so finding a local source for paint has gotten to be a bit of a pain...

Hi guys!  Sorry for the radio silence.  Actually been a little bit busy and got a bit hung up on the Sopwith Camel.  In the interim, finished a 1/72 Tamiya Spitfire Vb and that is an amazing little kit!  LOVE it!.

Anyway, I got hung up on the really crappy decals in the Hobby Craft kit, Patrick sent me the decals from the WNW kit that was a big help (Thanks!!), but I also ordered the Italeri Sopwith Camel kit.  Oh the folly of the ignorant:  The Italeri is a reboxing of the Hobby Craft kit.    But with much better decals.

So between the decals, and a desire to do a better job on the rigging, I'm trying a different build flow with the Italeri kit.

Here is the Hobby Craft bird: started with the rigging:

That is the WNW fuselage roundel (and you will see the colour difference when we get to the wings!) and the painted rudder, not the kit decal.  Rigging is a bit of a pain as the directions are not exactly clear, but I'm sorting through.

Here are the wings and you can see the color mismatch on the bottom of the lower wing:

The threads are the start of the rigging.

So for the Italeri kit, I decided to paint the fuselage early, add the necessary decals, and then will be able to start the rigging from the inside.  That is my theory anyway.  One of the fuselage rigging lines actually goes through the heart decal (on both sides) which is what got me thinking about getting the fuselage work done first, then adding the rigging.

BTW, the Italeri decals so far are working perfectly, snugging down with just a bit of MicroSol applied under and over the decal (on the fuselage seam in particular).

I don't expect much problem dealing with the top  and bottom fuselage seams (since I already know how they go from the Hobby Craft kit) so ideally this will make the rigging at least a BIT faster and with less damage to the fuselage finish.  We'll see!  Holiday weekend so hoping to get a lot done.  Another WWI show this coming weekend and ideally will have one or both Camels done for the show.  :innocent:

Hey Shaka!  Yeah, I think it is maybe getting a bit out of hand, but considering having to anchor the rigging lines somehow, rather than try and paint around them, this is the best my simple mind could come up with.  That, and having spent a few frustrating days trying to rig the Hobby Craft bird. Ugh.  UGLY!!! and no way am I trying a WNW kit till I figure this out!

Thanks guys!  I'll try and post some pics before the weekend.  The fuselage decals are fine actually.  Got the entire fuselage painted now will just have to clean up the seam (there will likely be a big one on top) but other than that, the sides will be left alone.  And also decaled the top wing and bottom of the bottom of the wing as well.  In for a penny....

My work to rig the Hobby Craft bird has hit a big snag.  I can't get the top wing to sit far enough forward for the fuselage supports to be anywhere near where they are supposed to be.  And with having rigged the outside struts, well, I've made quite a mess for myself to clean up.  SOOOO.

For the Italeri kit I'm going to get the wing and struts in place FIRST, then do the rigging.  I'm sure that will work loads better.

Cheers,

Chris

Making a little progress - have a lot of work and the Hobby Craft Camel really hung me up as I can't get the top wing set right.  Lesson learned for the Italeri kit.

I've done some paint work and a few more decals, weathering has started as well.  Have not set up the photo booth so apologies for the picture clarity.  RAF dark Green Model Master acrylic over a white primer base.

Here is the dash - the Italeri has really nice decals, which I clearly did not get centered very well on the IP.  The white one on the far left is only white paint

And here is the fuselage, with the rigging started (from the inside this time!!). Weathering on the topside and on the front of the 'wood' section.  Wood is the old Floquil color, the green is actually Model Master RAF Interior Green, with a base of white and RAF Dark Green to add variance. The aluminum is Vallejo Flat Aluminum, under a clear flat coat as well.

Off on a business trip for a few days, so back at it next weekend!
