Iain
Scratching my head on some of the panel colours on Balthasar's aircraft and I'm indebted to Neil Page/Falkeeins for the following links to his superb Luftwaffe blog: http://falkeeins.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/hptm-wilhelm-balthasar-1-jg-1-emil.html http://falkeeins.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/hptm-wilhelm-balthasar-kommodore-jg-2.html Iain
Zero77
That's taking shape very quickly, and looks very good as well ! Those Eduard E's are very cute and are very cheap at least in Europe. I bought a Weekend edition a few months ago for less than 20€. I'm going to build it as a B, with an Alleycat conversion. Even with the Alleycat conversion + an Aires cockpit, it's still very afordable for so many resin + plastic.
Iain
Looking for a 'simple' Battle of Britain period 109E scheme that I can back up with evidence is 'interesting' to say the least... This turned up after 4 days of Googling - and shows the period in the aircraft's life I want to model - and confirms all fuselage markings/yellow nose. No two profile drawings agreed on colours - and I hadn't found a lot in the way of period photos but, via the 109 group on Facebook/Tomas Prusa/modelforum.cz I now have some other images - probably later and looking like a replacement upper cowl in the older RLM65/02/71 demarcation - and lower cowl noticeably different - yellow 04. If you're looking in - thanks Tomas! Now - ignoring the upper cowl (but I suspect that's where the camouflage over the top of an all yellow nose comes from) - it also looks like a black wing root walk area - note straight front to back demarcation... Think I'm going to leave all of front cowls yellow (although top image does appear to have a darker colour on top - and is the gun breach cover Grey 02, or just dirty yellow 04?) - gun breach cover and side sections in either RLM02 (my pref at the mo) or RLM71 - upper fuselage in 02/71 (faded) and then the area between that and the later applied demarcation line lower down the fuselage sides in 71... Thoughts before I wade in? Too cold in the studio to mask/spray this evening - but if I can get the camouflage colours nailed it'll be time well spent. And, if I can get the Light Blue 65 on tomorrow evening I may be on for finishing in a week... Iain MikeC
Victor K2
Hi Iain, with regards the cowling fit, looking at that last photo it looks like Messerschmidt had some one from Eduard working on this one Great build and fantastic progress into the bargain. Looking forward to more updates Bob Iain
The1971Show
I agree with your verdict on the later cowl, if you look at the colour of the fuel octane marker, it's a lot darker than the sides of the engine cowl. Darren Iain
Iain
Part of the 'fun' with this airframe is that it was in use for a fair amount of time - and was partially repainted at least twice that I can see. Add to that removeable panels that may have been replaced from other airframes and pinning it down to a specific point in time is a challenge! Oh - and after Balthasar she was flown by his successor as Kommodore of JG2, Major Walter Oesau, which adds a little more 'fun'! Iain
Not had a chance to do anything - so behind the curve and won't be finished within the week... However - those very kind Facebook 109 peeps have un-earthed some new images of this airframe which mean I can make it as accurate as I can - within the confines of black and white photo interpretation! Hopefully more progress this weekend and, maybe, imminent completion. Iain
mattlow
Sorry, missed this for a couple of days and you're going at light speed..! I think you've picked the slats being slightly oversized. I can't recall anything else - not significant anyway. I cannot recall what the profi kits do for the supercharger intake - though I recall thinking it wasn't that great either... I would prob make my own louvres out of metal foil or similar. Matt Iain
Cpt_Farrel
Nice work Iain! And now, as promised, my interpretation of how this Bf109E evolved over time, spread over two blog posts, one for Balthasar and one for Oesau... http://theprofilepaintshop.blogspot.se/2016/03/bf109e-4-of-wilhelm-balthasar-1559-part.html http://theprofilepaintshop.blogspot.se/2016/03/bf109e-4-of-walter-oesau-1559-part-2.html I hope I'm not too late... Edit: This old profiles shows how the Yellow was likely intended to look had it not been messed up by the old emblems and badly applied dark paint... http://theprofilepaintshop.blogspot.se/2015/09/bf109e-1-of-mathias-massmann.html Edited March 12, 2016 by Cpt_Farrel mattlow and Iain
Iain
Supercharger intake same on both I think - others are in the loft at the mo... Flying Club 'Spring Clean' tomorrow morning - then Edgar Brooks' wake in Marlow in the afternoon - so doubt I'll get any more done this weekend. This is where we're at: Have fun! Last profile - think there should be an area of RLM71 extending along the top of the cowl? Edit re. above comment - she did at some point in this latter guise have a replacement upper cowl in the old RLM65/02/71 scheme with high demarcation - bottom two images in #35? Cpt_Farrel
Agreed, have you checked both my posts? The last profile of Oesau does show the replacement cowling. Iain
