Wow Kai...That is amazing work on your Flying Fort as well. Are those Archer rivets on the inside of the fuselage? Someone should make a sheet of the alclad aluminum stamps you see on the inside of those airplanes! Both of these are fun to watch...might as well just leave mine in the box with this competition!

Cheers....Ron

Thanks Ron. Yes, these rivets are Archer rivets. I think that Alclad stamps would be way to small to identify in that scale. And...it would be pain in the a.. to install them on the fuselage....hahaha. BUT...this is no competition! It is fun to watch every single work in progress topic here. So move on and start your Fortress too!!! As more and more people build the big 17...as more infos and ideas we get from each other. Looking fwd to see your WIP topic.

Finished most of the turret motor except for wiring and added the turret control and Norden bombsight. According to Donald Miller author of “Masters of the Airâ€, it was invented in 1931 by a Dutch engineer, but closer to the war the U.S. government spent 1.6 billion dollars to procure 90,000, 65% of the total spent on the Manhattan Project. Note I haven't yet permanently attached the turret cover, but it's getting there!

WOW Tom, that bombsight is superb. Is that the after market one?

Gerhard,

Thanks! It's the kit part with added photoetch from the Eduard Front Interior set. I just brush painted with Vallejo black, added a Flory black wash, then drybrushed with grey oil paint. Master Details (https://masterdetails.com) makes several add-ons for the HK B-17's, including a Norden bombsight, but I thought the kit part would work. I really should've taken the pictures on a lighter background!

Kai, you are far too kind, especially given your skill level! I've just slapped some pieces together based on the reference photos you and the others have generously shared, keeping in mind the limited view through the windows when completed. I'm hoping the wiring will really make this area look the part. I was lucky enough to have had time this weekend.

One tool I find indispensible for scratchbuilding with styrene that I don't find often mentioned here is The Chopper: https://www.midwesttechnology.com/the-chopper-ii-wood-and-styrene-cutter/

It makes precision cuts and is perfect for when you have to make duplicate parts ranging from bolt heads to box walls. I first used it for the scratchbuilding of this build: https://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=59905&hl=abrams&page=8

Ok, thanks. I have their Nordon bomb sight on the way. They say it's a kit unto itself. Your turned out brilliant. I also have the Eduard frontg interior set, so I have a fall back if I stuff up the resin Nordon kit.

Gerhard, thanks again. When you receive it, let us know what you think. I read something that B-17 bombardiers had to keep their bombsights in their personal safe when not in use.

Cheers, Tom

Yes...the Bombardier brought the sight out in a big bag with an armed guard for escort to the airplane. I think it had little "x's" on it to shoot to destroy it if need be. I think the Axis probably discovered a few in aircraft crashes to take apart and look at the technology. In the MC-130 I flew the sensitive gear had those little X's to shoot to destroy it if need be. When you get to the engines don't forget to put number 1 piston at Top Dead Center on the compression stroke! LOL! Great job so far! The 918th BG maintenance chief is very proud of your progress!!

Cheers....Ron
