alaninaustria
I like to take my time... and by polishing everything... you can be sure that there will be no little mistakes left un noticed! If you cut the Mastercasters sanding sponges off the carrier sheet you can minipulate them to get into all the cracks and corners.... alaninaustria
I then moved on to the darker camo colors... the masks were self made using normal office white paper soaked in water... if you let the paper dry a little so it is moist, but not totally dripping wet, then it will adhere to the surface nicely and there will be no leaks under the mask... then to remove, you just peal off the mask! alaninaustria
And some work on the tail area... I really like using the moist paper technique... it is so easy to keep clean... and there is absolutely no chance of lifting off the paint underneath! alaninaustria
Once I had the camo on, I started to prepare for the Montex masks (www.montex-mask.com)... I like to use these masks for the national insignia and other markings... painted on markings leave a very realistic finish! Thanks Jerry, much appreciated! alaninaustria
The Montex masks are very nicely done, alowing the modeller to position them exactly where you want them! I have learned that most aircraft of the time period were not painted exactly as we like to depict... so a little room for artistic licence is req'd Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
I like to spray on the Gunze Aqueous in very light coats to prevent any leakage and to guarantee that the paint dries as quickly as possible.... don't forget to polish between those coats! Spray 90 degree to the surface and keep the airbrush on target... nothing worse than having errant spray to clean up after! Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
For me there is nothing like taking off the masks to reveal the aircraft underneath.... almost better than opening up a Christmas gift! I was a little tired of the shark mouth P-40's so I went with the RAF version... Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
The serial number was a snatch with the Montex masks! Model_Monkey
alaninaustria
And the national markings... as I mentioned earlier.. there are no decal film edges to hide etc... it may take a little longer than using decals... but I like the finish! alaninaustria
And all the parts waiting for assembly Here I have given the bird a final polishing, sprayed on some Tamiya flat mixed with a little future to give it a semi flat finish and I have tackled the landing gear and other little bits. A wash was accomplished using Windsor & Newton oils, burnt sienna mixed with a drop of dishsoap (to alleviate surface tension) and mineral spirits (before the flat finish!!). The second shot is the micro tiny external gunsight I made using stretched sprue... I didn't like the kit part... it was too fat and bulbus to be realistic! alaninaustria
So, stay tuned and I'll get this sucker finished up when I can! I have started a base for it, and here you can see the begining.... Model_Monkey
DaveJ
Wow! All work on mine is now officially suspended for at least six months. Hopefully by then all of you will have forgotten this masterpiece and mine won't look quite as bad.
